Maximum Rock’n’Roll in association with Gypsy Hotel Proudly Presents:
THE URBAN VOODOO MACHINE
Plus Long John Laundry/The Broadway Twisters
Friday 11 October 2013
Celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, this Black’n’Red clad gang comes to Bedford for the first time with their Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop’n’Stroll,
Drawing deep from a dirty well where Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Dick Dale are enjoying a burlesque all-nighter with Ennio Morricone.
Led by the darkly charismatic, Norwegian-born songwriter/frontman Paul-Ronney Angel, The Urban Voodoo Machine is a supremely talented collective of London-based musicians who have been bringing the spirit of the carnie to an ever-growing audience of dedicated fans these past few years.
The group play a colourful array of instruments including guitars, drums, fiddle, trumpet, banjo, washboard, upright bass, gong, mandolin, accordion, harmonica, saxophone, ukulele, sousaphone and even empty bottles and tie racks to build their own unique and infectious sound which they call Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop’n’Stroll.
It is this sound that has seen the group invited to play at festivals throughout the UK and abroad including Glastonbury, Download, Sziget, Bestival, Hard Rock Calling and Latitude and led to support slots with The Pogues, The New York Dolls, Goran Bregovic and Paul McCartney.
The band veers into mariachi-influenced blues, whiskey-soaked country rags and punkabilly-style rave-ups.
THE WASHINGTON POST
“The culture crossing sound has roots in the Pogues, the Clash and cabaret noveau”
