SUMMARY:TV PRIEST - Thur 28 Oct 2021 - Esquires
DESCRIPTION:It’s tempting to think that you have all the answers\, screaming your gospel every day with certainty and anger. Life isn’t quite like that though\, and the debut album from London four-piece TV Priest instead embraces the beautiful and terrifying unknowns that exist personally\, politically and culturally.\nPosing as many questions as it answers\, Uppers is a thunderous opening statement that continues the UK’s recent resurgence of grubby\, furious post-punk music. It says something very different though – something completely its own.\nFour childhood friends who made music together as teenagers before drifting apart and then\, somewhat inevitably\, back together late in 2019\, TV Priest was born out of a need to create together once again\, and brings with it a wealth of experience and exhaustion picked up in the band’s years of pursuing “real life” and “real jobs\,” something those teenagers never had.\nIn November 2019\, the band – vocalist Charlie Drinkwater\, guitarist Alex Sprogis\, bass and keys player Nic Bueth\, and drummer Ed Kelland – played their first show\, to a smattering of friends in what they describe as an “industrial freezer” in the warehouse district of Hackney Wick. “It was like the pub in Peep Show with a washing machine just in the middle…” Charlie laughs\, remembering how they dodged Star Wars memorabilia and deep fat fryers while making their first statement as a band.\nUnsurprisingly\, there isn’t a precedent for introducing an album during a global pandemic\, but among the general sense of anxiety and unease pervading everything at the moment\, TV Priest’s entrance in April with the release of debut single “House of York” – a searing examination of the Monarchy – served as a breath of fresh air among the chaos\, its anger and confusion making some kind of twisted sense to the nation’s fried brains.\nIt’s the same continued global sense of anxiety that will greet the release of Uppers\, and it’s an album that has a lot to say right now. Taking musical cues from The Fall and Protomartyr as well as the mechanical\, pulsating grooves of Kosmische Musik\, it’s a record that moves with an untamed energy. Over the top of this rumbling musical machine is vocalist Charlie\, a cuttingly funny\, angry\, confused\, real frontman.\n\nTickets\nwww.seetickets.com/event/tv-priest/bedford-esquires/1801683

SUMMARY:CUD
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from the same art/design cauldron that produced fellow Leeds legends Soft Cell\, Scritti Politti\, and The Mekons\, CUD were the pre-Britpop answer to doleful shoegazing bands – fun-loving\, light-hearted\, romantic and downright catchy.\nAlternatively loved or loathed like a yeast extract\, CUD are indie rock for the unpretentious pleasure seeker\, boasting as they do the rich deep-lunged voice of Carl Puttnam\, edgy guitars of Mike Dunphy and tight\, funky rhythm section of William Potter\, bass and Gogs Byrn\, drums.\nCUD were initially lauded for their quirky Peel session cover of ‘You Sexy Thing’ in 1987. They soon built up a huge live following and buffed up their repertoire with a string of unstraight pop beauties\, best exemplified by the 1990 album ‘Leggy Mambo’. This led to a major-label deal with A&M in 1991\, front-page NME coverage\, massive sellout gigs and proper Top 30 hits\, ‘Rich and Strange’ and ‘Purple Love Balloon’.\nMisunderstood by record companies and press\, CUD packed away their guitars and sticks in 1995 but\, bolstered by a greatest hits anthology (‘Rich and Strange’) in 2006\, they agreed to tread the boards again\, with a further reunion following in 2012 (now with original guitarist and key songwriter Mike Dunphy) and continue to find an army of ‘Space CUDets’ still eager to sing along\, dance like fruitcakes and invade their stage.\nCUD appear for the first time ever at Esquires on Oct 27\n\nTickets\nwww.seetickets.com/event/cud/bedford-esquires/1746643

SUMMARY:Echobelly (full band show) + guests
DESCRIPTION:ECHOBELLY\, considered by many as one of the major players in the British BritPop\nscene\, are about to embark on a “post lockdown” UK tour in September and October\n2021. \nEchobelly debuted in 1993 with their first EP\, Bellyache\, on the independent\nPandemonium label. The favourable response including gushing press\nreviews and sold out gigs ensured the securing of a recording contract with\nEpic via their subsidiary\, Rhythm King. Their first single from their debut\nalbum E.G.O\, was Insomniac and the album reached number 8 in the Uk\nAlbum charts. \nBy the time they released their 2nd album “ON” in 1995\, they were rising up\nthe ranks of the British music scene\, with regular press\, tv and radio and two\nworld tours under their belt. The album celebrated the endless possibilities of\nthe human spirit. In “Great Things”\, Madan sang “I want to do great things/I\ndon’t want to compromise/I want to know what love is/I want to know\neverything.” The album’s mostly optimistic feel provides an intriguing contrast\nwith its serious subject matter. As one journalist wrote\, “Both music and lyrics\nexamine the tension between order and liberty”. Listeners in the UK\nresponded favourably to the album\, driving three singles from the release into\nthe Top 30 of the UK Singles Chart. \nDuring 1995 and 1996\, legal problems interrupted the success of Echobelly.\nThe group also had disagreements with Rhythm King after the label moved to\nArista. The band chose to stay with Epic. The release of their third album on\nEpic\, “Lustra” was issued in November 1997. A single from the album\, “The\nWorld is Flat”\, was released in August of that year\, with one more UK and\nEuropean tour put together. \nA four-year hiatus was brought to an end in 2001 when the band returned with\nthe “Digit” EP and their fourth album\, “People Are Expensive” which were\nreleased on their own Fry Up label. Two further singles\, “Tell Me Why” and\n“Kali Yuga” (a remixed version of the album track) followed. \nIn 2004 Echobelly released a fifth album – again through their own Fry Up\nlabel\, called “Gravity Pulls”\, which echoed a deeper\, mellifluous and\nexpansive side to their writing. \nAfter a period of witnessing the whole music scene change around them\, the\nband went their separate ways while Glenn and Sonya remained working\ntogether and released two acoustic albums under the name “Calm of Zero”\nwith an acoustic tour around the UK. \nIn 2016 the band went back in the studio to record their fifth album\,\nANARCHY AND ALCHEMY with producer Ian Grimble. The band have\nreleased the first eponymously titled single to critical acclaim and spot radio\nplays on UK radio including\, BBC radio 2 and 6 and released HEYHEYHEY and FACES IN THE MIRROR as singles\, with tours in May and November to coincide. \nIt was the response of the sold out Scala show in October 2016 that they\ndecided to once more make a return into the live music field with a new band\nline up and the release of the album\, Anarchy and Alchemy\, released in 2017.\nIn 2019\, Glenn and Sonya curated their first album of B-sides\, live tracks and\ndemos\, the double sided “Black Heart Lullabies” and toured the UK with a\npianist and bass player\, as a paired down\, more intimate live experience.\nNow they are back with a full band line-up\, eager to re-connect with their fans\nin the live performance arena

The band emerged as a full\, live act in 2017 following the early successes of soul 45 and Craig Charles favourite\, Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover (Record Kicks\, Italy)\, a northern soul remix of Emma Beatson’s debut single Do It (selected by Craig Charles for the second volume of his Freestyle Records compilation series) and The Hawkmen’s blazing Keep On Working EP (Mocambo\, Germany) which yielded another 45 and was widely played on BBC Radio 2 and Radio 6.\nIn 2017 Love Is Blind was released and features on the Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club Vol.5 compilation and received more BBC 6 Music airplay. 2018 got of to a flying start with the release of the Chemistry Of Love single\, yet more plays on BBC 6 Music\, leading to a mini UK tour and concerts in Germany and France. 2019 has seen the release of Soulful Dress (a huge dance floor hit)\, The Hawkmen’s self titled debut album\, and the live video for ‘Baby Tonight’\, which has gone viral on YouTube with over 200\,000 views and rising. SUMMARY:Justin Sullivan (New Model Army): Solo
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to be bringing Justin Sullivan to Esquires for an intimate\, seated show in October.\nJustin Sullivan stepped out from New Model Army to release his second solo album in May this year\, eighteen years after the first. He has now announced a 14 date solo tour where he will be playing tracks from the album and from his extensive New Model Army back catalogue.\n“Surrounded” is a collection of sixteen new songs\, written in the first weeks of the 2020 lockdown. These songs are again guitar-vocal compositions highlighting Sullivan’s love of storytelling\, wide open landscapes and powerful atmospheres.\nMostly recorded at home\, the album also features contributions from many other musicians including Jon Thorne on bass (Lamb)\, Tom Moth on harp (Florence and the Machine – and brother of NMA bassist Ceri Monger)\, plus string arrangements from composer friends Tobias Unterberg\, Henning Nügel and Shir-Ran Yinon. Also featured are all the current members of New Model Army. The album was mixed by Lee Smith at Greenmount Studios in Leeds\, co-producer and mixer of New Model Army’s recent albums\, including 2019’s “From Here”\, their highest charting album to date globally.\nJustin Sullivan says: “Under the circumstances\, it wasn’t particularly surprising that this was the moment to make another solo record and the songs came thick and fast in the first few weeks of the lockdown. There is not so much about ‘what’s happening in the World’. As with “Navigating by the Stars”\, which was written in the aftermath of 9/11\, I wanted to write about other things – some well-known stories\, some less well-known\, some autobiographical and more a landscape of the imagination than social comment.”\nTickets on sale Friday 13 August 10am here:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/…/bedford-esquires/2018097\nNew album Surrounded is out now: https://JustinSullivan.lnk.to/Surrounded

SUMMARY:Willie J Healey - 01.10.21 / Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents..\nwww.thepadpresents.com\nWillie J Healey + Wunderhorse – Friday 1st October 2021 – Bedford Esquires\n** Please note this show has been rescheduled from 20 April 2020 / 27 July 2020 / 17 November 2020 & 2nd May 2021 – all tickets remain valid**\n Tickets > https://williejhealeylive.plctrmm.to\n Pre-Order the new album ‘Twin Heavy’ released August 7th 2020:https://williejhealey.plctrmm.to/twinheavy\nOne of the UK’s finest young talents\, Willie J Healey is coming to Esquires on Friday 1st October 2021l!\nThis is a musician who can write about any topic that grabs his attention: from the innocence of young love\, through to gothic visitations from the devil and alien abductions. He’s unconstrained by genre\, moving at will between scrappy garage-rock\, evocative Americana and sumptuous psychedelia. And it’s all his own work\, the product of obsessively writing song after song in his studio/garage/bedroom.\nHe puts a contemporary filter on timeless ‘70s-flavoured sounds. It’s all there in his forthcoming EP ‘Hello Good Morning’ and his new album that will follow next year. It continues his relationship with new music champions YALA! Records\, who released his previous EP ‘666 Kill’ in 2018.\nBoxing evolved into the first long-term obsession of his life. He trained Monday to Friday from the ages of ten to seventeen\, competing in 42 amateur bout. “Boxing used to scare the hell out of me the whole time\,” he admits. “For a lot of boxers it’s scary. It’s like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. It was an obsession and I loved the routine of it as well.” The turning point came when a careers advisor suggested – for surely the first time in history – that music could be a better option. “For me music was a break from boxing. It was my little secret.”\nHe cites his high profile fans (and now friends) – including Laurie Vincent of Slaves\, Orlando Weeks\, Jamie T and Gaz Coombes – as inspirations. “It blows my mind because I love them all as artists. I can see why they’re all in the position they are and I want to be like that. But I’m flattered when anyone knows and likes my music. We get some hip kids at the shows and that’s cool. And we get some not-so-hip kids too\, and that’s great. Everyone’s welcome.”\n———————————\nTickets on sale from 10am\, Friday 24th July from Seetickets

SUMMARY:Yard Act / 29.09.21 / Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents\nwww.thepadpresents.com\nYard Act + Guests – Wednesday 29th September – Bedford Esquires\nYard Act formed in Leeds in September 2019 when Ryan Needham found himself temporarily living in James Smith’s spare bedroom. The two had been pub associates for years\, but their new living circumstances served as a catalyst for their friendship and creative partnership which saw them fuse James’ interest in spoken word with Ryan’s primitive proto-punk demos using an ancient drum machine and borrowed bass guitar. They released their first material in March 2020\, coinciding with you-know-what\, and with just three singles (The Trapper’s Pelts\, Fixer Upper and Peanuts) and three gigs to date\, Yard Act have staked out a territory all their own.\nSetting up their own imprint Zen F.C. they released their debut 7” which can now only be found for exorbitant sums on Discogs\, they’ve scored two 6music playlists\, and they’ve won a growing fanbase with their coruscating\, narrative driven\, spoken word dance-punk. Now girding their loins for a 2021 filled with new music\, new recordings\, debut novels\, and (fingers crossed) plenty of live shows\, Yard Act have most definitely marked our cards as one of UK’s most exciting prospects.\n—————–\nTickets are on sale now:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/…/bedford-esquires/1806242\nSupport TBA\n14+ Ages\, under 16s to be accompanied by an adult\nDoors 7.30pm
