SUMMARY:Peat & Diesel + Guests - Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:Peat & Diesel\nBedford Esquires\nWednesday 1st December\, doors at 7.30pm\nThe Pad Presents are excited to host Peat & Diesel on their first tour to this area of the UK!\nThe story began when three Stornoway Cove’s (Innes\, Uilly and Boydie) met up in the house to have the craic on a Saturday night playing music with just the dog and the cat watching. After a few tunes getting thrown across the room Boydie stated muttering a few sentences. As he is a man of few words no attention was really given to him until he shouted ‘Quick\, line me out!’ Not a second to spare a set of old broken headphones were cable tied to a guitar amp and out came a few cobwebs followed shortly after with a sound nobody had ever heard before. What came next was five gallons of lyrics\, verse after verse\, song after song – PEAT & DIESEL WAS BORN!\nThe songs won’t make much sense to the average person\, but the person behind the lyrics isn’t your average man so if you have a listen and you can relate to it you are a special breed!\nPeat & Diesel – “Light my Byre” takes you on a journey to the heart of the Western Isles\, where #peatlemania was born. You might have time for a brandy in the ‘Airidh’ but don’t miss your ride in Calum Dan’s Transit Van\, we ain’t stopping till we lose the water!\nSelling out Glasgow’s iconic Barrowlands in one day as well as over 10\,000 tickets across their debut tour\, has seen the band turn a corner in the public eye and with the band’s second album “Uptown Fank” reaching the top 30 on release\, things just keep going from strength to strength!\nTickets on sale at £15 plus booking fee from seetickets from 10am Friday 26th March\nhttp://www.peatanddiesel.band/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/PEATANDDIESEL/\nhttps://www.instagram.com/peatanddiesel/

SUMMARY:James Taylor Quartet / DJ Mark Russell
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents\nwww.thepadpresents.com\nJames Taylor Quartet + DJ Mark Russell – Esquires\, Bedford\nNew date – Friday 1st October 2021 – unable to attend? Please get a refund form the point of purchase.\nJames Taylor\, one of the great British instrumentalists of his generation has taken his trademark howling Hammond sound to the masses for over 25 years; still famed for its upbeat\, energetic live shows… with no sign of slowing down. The band’s relentlessly entertaining tunes take inspiration from the rare-groove style funk\, and boogaloo funk of the 60s and 70s and\, the band is\, without a doubt\, one of the most important jazz-pop crossover outfits in British live musical history today.\nAfter the collapse of mod legends The Prisoners in the 1980s\, and before moving to Sweden\, James recorded some demos with brother David on guitar\, the bass player from The Prisoners\, and a drummer from down the road… and thus The James Taylor Quartet was born. From tiny acorns mighty oaks do indeed grow\, and it wasn’t long before the first single\, Blow Up\, had been released\, the band were in the studio rehearsing for the Mission Impossible EP\, gigs were booked\, and the late great John Peel was offering a session.\nSkip forward 25 years and JTQ has evolved into one of the most exciting and well respected touring bands in the UK. With numerous albums to its name\, the band’s recorded output is not to be scoffed at. ‘Prolific’ is an understatement\, with albums touching genres as diverse as jazz\, funk\, soul\, rock\, and even rap\, not to mention a handful of library albums in between. Each album is an absolute must for any Hammond fan: James’ playing providing a solid and accomplished lead as always. Live\, the band is explosive\, with a breathtaking\, diverse unmatched back catalogue.\nJTQ’s fired-up signature tune\, The Theme from Starsky and Hutch\, cemented its reputation as master of the jazz-funk-r’n’b workout; 60s spy themes\, psychedelic and free-form jazz all added something to the band’s distinctive sound. Originally playing the Hammond B3 organ in the UK mod revival band The Prisoners\, James Taylor formed his own quartet\, and began playing music similar to the rare-groove jazz-funk then in vogue around London. By the early 90s\, that movement had spawned acid jazz\, and JTQ found itself at the forefront of a vibrant young club scene. The first single\, Blow-Up\, was released on the Re Elect The President label\, a precursor to Acid Jazz. The band’s debut album\, Mission Impossible\, was released the following year\, predominantly consisting of covers of 60s film themes such as Alfie\, Mrs Robinson and Goldfinger. In the early 1990s\, the single Love The Life reached the Top 40\, and the accompanying album\, Supernatural Feeling\, settled in the Top 30 UK charts. After releases on Polydor and Big Life Records\, JTQ returned to Acid Jazz\, and In The Hand of The Inevitable remains the label’s biggest selling album to date.\nIn 1997 James had the chance to fulfil a dream when he was asked to score the theme tune to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery\, the spy spoof starring Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley. JTQ’s Whole Lotta Live album was nominated for a MOBO award in 1998\, and the following year James featured on Tom Jones’ duets album\, Reload. James’ musical talent has been admired by numerous other acts: The Wonderstuff\, Manic Street Preachers\, The Pogues and U2 have all featured James and his distinctive Hammond sound on their albums.\n——————-\nTickets £20 adv + BF from:\nwww.thepadpresents.com

SUMMARY:Italia 90 + Exploding Ear Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Italia 90 are one of the latest bands to emerge from the burgeoning music scene gravitating around the post-punk breeding grounds of venues such as Brixton’s The Windmill\, Peckham’s Rye Wax and the previous incarnation of Five Bells in New Cross. \nThe group relocated to London seven years ago from their native Brighton\, bringing along with them a hardened determination to carve out a unique space for themselves within a competitive environment. \nSporting distinctive stages names (Les Miserable\, J Dangerous\, Bobby Portrait and Captain ACAB)\, their output to date bears a particular resemblance to the trajectory of the punk story. \nEarly releases evoke the politically charged rhetoric and relentless drive of bands like Sham 69\, Cockney Rejects and The Ruts.\nMeanwhile\, their latest EP mirrors the transition into the rhythmic angularity of the proceeding post-punk years heralded in by Joy Division\, The Fall and Wire. \nNevertheless\, Italia 90 have not shaken off their true punk ethos\, either musically or politically\, as their work ponders and rails against the complexities\, hypocrisies and frustrations of modern life. \nSupport from the incredible EAR EXPLODING ENSEMBLE.

SCAMMERS TARGET SOLD OUT EVENTS LIKE THIS. \nWe are very pleased to announce that the mighty Don Broco are heading home for a show at Esquires on Wednesday 10th November 2021! \nQuite simply one of the biggest artists ever to come out of B-Town\, Broco have been tearing up tours all over the world\, including a sold out Ally Pally show on their last tour of the UK! To have the guys come back and play a show for the venue on their home turf is hugely appreciated and is in association with the #saveourvenues campaign being run by Music Venue Trust. \nWe reached out to the band earlier this month in response to the current plight that we find ourselves in as part of our Crowdfunding initiative. The band\, their management and agent have been hugely supportive and have offered to come and play a free show for us\, with all proceeds from sales going to help us through the current crisis – we couldn’t be more grateful for their support!

SUMMARY:The Nightingales // Pete Astor // Kamura // Sunday 7th November 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents\nwww.thepadpresents.com\nThis show has been rescheduled from Sun 22nd November 2020\, all tickets remain valid\nThe Nightingales + Pete Astor + Kamura – Thursday 6th May 2021 – Bedford Esquiresn We are very pleased to announce that The Nightingales will be coming to Esquires in November 2021!\nIt’s unusual for an act to hit its peak after four decades. Yet here it is.\nCommercial Suicide Man\, their 7” Vic Godard collaboration\, was released as the group entered the studio to record their ninth full-length album. While the single sold out almost immediately\, got picked as BBC 6’s Single of the Week\, and received more airplay than any Nightingales record to date\, it won’t have prepared fans for the most ambitious album in the band’s catalogue.\nThe band’s climb to become Britain’s most dazzling live band – shows are played at full energy without the breaks lesser combos need to breathe\, drink or chatter – was unexpected\, and public awakening to their humour\, skill and brilliance demands revision of post-punk history. The Nightingales emerge as the industrious ant to their peers’ workshy grasshopper personae\, appearing victoriously at the finish line to puzzled realisations that they’d ever even been in the race.\nThe Nightingales have notoriously had a new label for each new album\, a fact which might reasonably call for consumer caution\, but they are part of nothing resembling a ‘scene’\, they speak their own musical language\, and while they bust out slogans about being “slightly superior to others of their ilk” . . . the fact is\, they have no ilk. One label head proudly claims his rationale for the release of one of their albums as nothing less than “a public service.”\nSome of The Nightingales’ historic lack of acclaim stems from a density of ideas\, which the band see no need to mine for profit. Album closer It Is milks Sister Ray dissonance over a Krautrock groove\, with Robert’s vocals calling to mind the last gasps of a drowning man while Fliss turns the tune on its head with voice recalling Nancy Sinatra on Some Velvet Morning. But this description’s a crude approximation of small aspects of a whole which sounds utterly unlike any of those\, and breathtaking though it is\, odds are they’ll never record anything like it again\, but the same could be said for the rest of the album.\nFaust’s Hans-Joachim Irmler adds keyboards and The Lovely Eggs’ Holly Blackwell’s languid voice features on one song\, but the album’s real shock is that the band has now gelled to an unspoken\, nearly psychic interplay. Captain Beefheart\, one of Robert Lloyd’s musical heroes\, is best known for the difficult-but-classic Trout Mask Replica\, and like that album\, this one contains nary a ‘hit’\, yet here every song sticks in the brain and grooves . . . outclassing Beefheart’s masterpiece by virtue of its effortless charm.\nJohn Peel noted\, “Their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980s to look at the period rationally and other\, infinitely better known\, bands stand revealed as charlatans.” It’s doubtful he would have bothered with such a pre-emptive defence if he’d been able to witness the explosive growth of the band during their second incarnation.\nBoth You Don’t Know What You’re Doing and Chaff both channel Television until going somewhere Verlaine and company wouldn’t have conceived\, the number of ideas contained within Enemy Of Promise could readily bolster an album by any decent group\, before Chaff comes up with half-a-dozen more. And while your mileage may vary\, those may even be the lesser tunes on the album.\nPerish The Thought will be promoted by a far-flung tour\, from Scotland to Serbia\, with some dates already sold out. Guest supports include Stewart Lee\, The Wolfhounds and Near Jazz Experience. Several videos from the album will appear in coming months\, and a Marc Riley 6music session will take place in October.\nThe album has been pressed on 180g heavyweight vinyl\, with a gatefold sleeve\, specially-commissioned artwork by the wonderful David Yates\, with a download card (the album is also available on CD) . . . but they haven’t bothered to stick their name on the front cover.\n——————-\nTickets are £10 Adv – Available from 10am Friday 8th November:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/…/bedford-esquires/1456687\nTickets also available from \nSlide Record Shop\n\, \nMario’s Hair Design\nand Esquires Bar. \nThis is a 14+ ages show\, under 16s to be accompanied by an adult

DESCRIPTION:Ferocious Dog return to Bedford Esquires as a full band as part of their ‘The Hope’ tour of Autumn 2021.\nThey’ve been hailed as “a representation of our gut feeling\, savage and merciless” and at the same time\, called “folk in the grand tradition of it being the peoples sound.”\nFerocious Dog\, however are all those things. More than a band\, they are a family. “To listen to the Ferocious Dog as it snarls and growls at the world is to show responsibility” said a Louder Than War review of their brilliant\, recently released and Fake News And Propaganda album\, but this is an outfit that shows compassion too.\nAnd that\, in a world where the lines of truth are blurred by the rich\, powerful and corrupt\, is priceless.\n“Ferocious dog are a very socially conscious band and their music and lyrics are designed not only to make you smile and sing along but also to make you feel something.” – Folk-Metal.NL.\nA band that does drives for foodbanks – not for headlines\, but because it was the right thing to do – a band that welcomes Hunt Sabs and conservationists Sea Shepherd to their shows\, but a band where none of that really matters.\nNo\, here the feeling is important. Ferocious Dog is the group where fans are tattooed in the shop belonging to the lead singer\, Ken Bonsall\, where the violinist and band leader\, Dan Booth prints the posters\, and Les Carter (ex-Carter USM) plays the lead guitar. They can wow a punk festival one minute\, a folk festival the next – and fit right in anywhere.\nWith Bonsall and Booth and Carter combining and John Leonard playing just about everything with strings\, while the rhythm section of Alex Smith and John Alexander bring the power and energy\, you have a whole greater than the sum of its parts.\n“9/10 Earning a reputation as the UK’s most exciting Folk Punk band for good reason” – Vive Le Rock·\nIt is more than social commentary too. “My politics are my politics\,” explains Bonsall and “we’ll sing those songs about what we believe\, but whatever side of the political divide you are from\, we want you to feel welcome at an FD show.\n“We always say you’re never alone at one of our gigs and that is the most important thing to us.”\nNow\, they head out on the latest run of shows\, with Bonsall promising some surprises. “There’s a reason we’ve called this run more Fake News” he smiled. “We have songs on this album that we haven’t played yet and we really want to\, stuff like “Yellow Feather” about a Hell Hound that is no longer with us….”\nThose Hell Hounds are their fans. Except\, they’re not. They are as much part of the band as the six on stage. And they’ll hit those stages at the dates below. They’ve been reckoned as the “best live band in Britain.” Go and see why.\nTickets onsale now on for £17.50 + booking fee from seetickets:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/…/bedford-esquires/1672962

SUMMARY:Sea Power / Fri 29.10.21 / Bedford Esquires / SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents\nwww.thepadpresents.com\nPLEASE NOTE – THIS IS A RESCHEDULED DATE – ALL TICKETS REMAIN VALID\nBritish Sea Power + Guests – Friday 29th October 2021 – Bedford Esquires\nA booking many years in the making\, and finally confirmed as part of our 30th anniversary celebrations\, we are very pleased to announce that British Sea Power will be gracing the Esquires stage on Sunday 14th June!\nA sextet from Natland\, Cumbria\, England\, British Sea Power are a rather conceptual indie band — compared more than once to Joy Division and the Cure — whose music incorporates elements of art rock and post-rock experimentalism. The group was formed in 2000 by brothers Yan Scott Wilkinson(vocals and guitar) and Neil Hamilton Wilkinson (vocals\, guitar\, and bass)\, who teamed up with a longtime friend\, drummer Matthew Wood. When Yan enrolled at the University of Reading\, he met like-minded musician Martin Noble\, who played guitar and keyboards\, and soon they began performing under the name British Air Powers\, changing the name to British Sea Power after a song from their early repertoire.\nTheir live shows received notice early on\, thanks in no small part to the group’s offbeat theatrics and visual flair (the band often wore military uniforms\, large stuffed birds\, and artificial plants were a big part of their stage set\, and a man in a bear costume sometimes joined them on-stage). Rough Trade’s Geoff Travis was impressed by one of British Sea Power’s (literally) wild performances and signed them\, the rest they say\, is history.\nFull support line up to be announced

SUMMARY:TV PRIEST - Thur 28 Oct 2021 - Esquires
DESCRIPTION:It’s tempting to think that you have all the answers\, screaming your gospel every day with certainty and anger. Life isn’t quite like that though\, and the debut album from London four-piece TV Priest instead embraces the beautiful and terrifying unknowns that exist personally\, politically and culturally.\nPosing as many questions as it answers\, Uppers is a thunderous opening statement that continues the UK’s recent resurgence of grubby\, furious post-punk music. It says something very different though – something completely its own.\nFour childhood friends who made music together as teenagers before drifting apart and then\, somewhat inevitably\, back together late in 2019\, TV Priest was born out of a need to create together once again\, and brings with it a wealth of experience and exhaustion picked up in the band’s years of pursuing “real life” and “real jobs\,” something those teenagers never had.\nIn November 2019\, the band – vocalist Charlie Drinkwater\, guitarist Alex Sprogis\, bass and keys player Nic Bueth\, and drummer Ed Kelland – played their first show\, to a smattering of friends in what they describe as an “industrial freezer” in the warehouse district of Hackney Wick. “It was like the pub in Peep Show with a washing machine just in the middle…” Charlie laughs\, remembering how they dodged Star Wars memorabilia and deep fat fryers while making their first statement as a band.\nUnsurprisingly\, there isn’t a precedent for introducing an album during a global pandemic\, but among the general sense of anxiety and unease pervading everything at the moment\, TV Priest’s entrance in April with the release of debut single “House of York” – a searing examination of the Monarchy – served as a breath of fresh air among the chaos\, its anger and confusion making some kind of twisted sense to the nation’s fried brains.\nIt’s the same continued global sense of anxiety that will greet the release of Uppers\, and it’s an album that has a lot to say right now. Taking musical cues from The Fall and Protomartyr as well as the mechanical\, pulsating grooves of Kosmische Musik\, it’s a record that moves with an untamed energy. Over the top of this rumbling musical machine is vocalist Charlie\, a cuttingly funny\, angry\, confused\, real frontman.\n\nTickets\nwww.seetickets.com/event/tv-priest/bedford-esquires/1801683

SUMMARY:CUD
DESCRIPTION:Emerging from the same art/design cauldron that produced fellow Leeds legends Soft Cell\, Scritti Politti\, and The Mekons\, CUD were the pre-Britpop answer to doleful shoegazing bands – fun-loving\, light-hearted\, romantic and downright catchy.\nAlternatively loved or loathed like a yeast extract\, CUD are indie rock for the unpretentious pleasure seeker\, boasting as they do the rich deep-lunged voice of Carl Puttnam\, edgy guitars of Mike Dunphy and tight\, funky rhythm section of William Potter\, bass and Gogs Byrn\, drums.\nCUD were initially lauded for their quirky Peel session cover of ‘You Sexy Thing’ in 1987. They soon built up a huge live following and buffed up their repertoire with a string of unstraight pop beauties\, best exemplified by the 1990 album ‘Leggy Mambo’. This led to a major-label deal with A&M in 1991\, front-page NME coverage\, massive sellout gigs and proper Top 30 hits\, ‘Rich and Strange’ and ‘Purple Love Balloon’.\nMisunderstood by record companies and press\, CUD packed away their guitars and sticks in 1995 but\, bolstered by a greatest hits anthology (‘Rich and Strange’) in 2006\, they agreed to tread the boards again\, with a further reunion following in 2012 (now with original guitarist and key songwriter Mike Dunphy) and continue to find an army of ‘Space CUDets’ still eager to sing along\, dance like fruitcakes and invade their stage.\nCUD appear for the first time ever at Esquires on Oct 27\n\nTickets\nwww.seetickets.com/event/cud/bedford-esquires/1746643
