SUMMARY:Cam Cole + The Dead Reds
DESCRIPTION:Cam Cole + Guests \n7.30pm\, Thursday 8th December\, Bedford Esquires \nOn Thursday 8th December we welcome back to Esquires the legend that is Cam Cole. \nMultiple viral internet videos\, a rapidly increasing following from all over the world\, a well-received debut album\, international tours planned… Everything was set up for London busker Cam Cole to make the move from the street to the stage. And then the world came to a standstill. \nWhat could have killed any momentum he had\, Cam turned into an opportunity to connect with the fans he had gathered. The advantage of being a one-man band is that rehearsals are rather easy to set up – especially in a socially distanced world. And even the drummer shows up on time if you are the drummer yourself. And so Cam stayed in touch and visible with his “Sounds From The Van” video series\, streamed directly from his van rehearsal room. He released a live album recorded on the streets of Camden before the pandemic\, which reminded everyone what we were missing. And after appearing as himself in the Golden Globe-nominated Apple TV series “Ted Lasso”\, Cam found that during the pandemic his audience had more than doubled in size. \nWith his second album Crooked Hill out to great reviews\, he is ready to kick it up a notch. The heavier\, ferocious sound of his sophomore fits well in a time where people are looking to finally release all that pent-up energy. And Cam is just the right man for the job. \nTickets on sale now from Seetickets priced £12.50 and in person from Esquires Bar and Slide Record Store.

SUMMARY:Big Country + Sunsinger & the High Seas ***SOLD OUT***
DESCRIPTION:Big Country + Guests\nLive at Bedford Esquires\, Friday 2nd December\nBig Country was originally formed in 1981 by guitar playing founder members Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson both native of the band’s hometown Dunfermline in Scotland.\nInitially driven by a shared vision of widescreen guitar melody\, harmony and lyric\, the classic Big Country sound was further enhanced later that summer by the arrival of drummer Mark Brzezicki and bass player Tony Butler. This is the Big Country that (with producer Steve Lillywhite)\, recorded the classic debut album ‘The Crossing’ in 1983.\nThe band broke massively worldwide with the release of the album’s classic singles ‘Fields Of Fire’\, ‘Chance’ and signature song ‘In A Big Country’\, which went on to become massive worldwide hits\, selling over 2 million copies and driving ‘The Crossing’ to 3 prestigious Grammy nominations in the USA.\nThe run of success continued throughout the 1980′s with the release of the anthemic single ‘Wonderland’ and the second album ‘Steeltown’ (1984)\, which debuted at Number 1 in the UK and contained the hit singles ‘East Of Eden\, ‘Just a Shadow’ and ‘Where The Rose Is Sown’ . In 1985\, Big Country appeared at Live Aid in London followed by further successful album releases ‘The Seer’ (1986\, which included the bands biggest UK hit ‘Look Away’\, which also reached Number 1 in the Irish Singles chart) and ‘Peace In Our Time’ (1988)\, which saw the band playing the first ever privately promoted gig in Russia at the Moscow Sports Stadium.\nAt the start of the 90’s ‘Through A Big Country’\, featuring all the bands classic hits was released\, followed by the fifth studio album ‘No Place Like Home’ (1991) taking the band’s total record sales to well over five million copies.\nFurther studio albums Buffalo Skinners (1993) and ‘Why The Long Face (1995) followed\, which saw Big Country landing the special guest slot on the Rolling Stones ‘Voodoo Lounge’ European tour and several shows in the UK and Ireland with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in 1995.\nIn August 1998 they were once again invited to open for the Rolling Stones on their ‘Bridges To Babylon” tour of Europe prompting Mick Jagger to say that Big Country were “one of the best opening bands we ever had”.\nOn December 16th 2001\, Stuart Adamson tragically took his own life\, the remaining three members had no real thoughts of performing as Big Country again but\, Tony Butler\, Mark Brzezicki and Bruce Watson re-united in 2007 to celebrate the band’s Twenty-fifth anniversary. “It wasn’t a come-back… it was just the three of us having fun\, as friends and as a band\, and hoping to give the fans some enjoyment by playing our songs live\, to celebrate 25 years” – Bruce Watson\nThe current line-up features Bruce Watson – guitar\, Jamie Watson – guitar (Bruce’s son)\, Mark Brzezicki – Drums\, Simon Hough – Vocals\, Scott Whitley Bass and As Big Country ventures into the 2020s\, they continue to entertain fans around the world the way only Big Country music can.\nTickets priced £25 are on sale from 10am Seetickets on Friday 21st January and are available in person from the local outlets of Esquires Bar\, Slide Record Store & Vinyl Revelations in Luton.

SUMMARY:The Style Councillors
DESCRIPTION:AGMP presents\n\nTHE STYLE COUNCILLORS\n“Keeps On Burning” Tour\n\nThe Style Councillors are the world’s one and only tribute to The Style Council.\n\nFormed in 2013 by Darren Fletcher (Paul Weller) and Steve Hayes (Mick Talbot)\, The Style Councillors have quickly built a loyal fanbase for the group which was Paul Weller’s home for the majority of the 1980’s and where he wrote some of his finest songs. Dani Clay (Dee C. Lee) and Craig Read (Steve White) are joined by the Bad Manners Horn Section and a stellar line up of musicians hell-bent on recreating the sound of The Style Council.\n\nAfter the dissolution of The Jam in 1982\, Paul Weller joined forces with Mick Talbot\, formerly of The Merton Parkas\, Dexys Midnight Runners and The Bureau\, to form The Style Council. The band released a string of succesful singles between 1983-1989 such as Speak Like a Child\, Money-Go-Round\, Long Hot Summer\, My Ever Changing Moods\, You’re The Best Thing\, Shout To The Top\, Walls Come Tumbling Down\, A Solid Bond In Your Heart\, Come To Milton Keynes\, The Lodgers\, Why I Went Missing\, and more.

SUMMARY:The Golden Dregs + Guests
DESCRIPTION:The Golden Dregs might be on the project of just one man\, Benjamin Woods\, but beyond that it’s a lot of different things. “It’s adopted the guise of a bar-band\, a lonely man with a piano\, a singer with a backing band\, and an awkward and insecure karaoke performance\,” says Woods. “I think of The Golden Dregs as a project as opposed to a group or a person. It’s a platform for me to explore different musical avenues.” \nIt makes sense that The Golden Dregs\, which is led by the rich baritone croon and Americana-tinged tones (think Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields collaborating with David Berman of Silver Jews with Dan Michaelson making the brews) of Woods\, would encompass so many things after a period of such instability and movement for him. Cornwall\, Manchester\, Cornwall\, Germany\, back to Cornwall and then onto London. Woods has spent the last several years ricocheting from place-to-place\, shifting from a cockroach-infested place in Manchester to a failed relocation to Germany that resulted in him having to temporarily move back in with his parents – all the while searching for a place of stability to make his second album after 2018’s Lafayette. Yet for someone who has been such an itinerant in recent years\, Woods has made a record with a distinct and coherent personality that radiates the feeling of someone who has finally found where they need to be and where they want to go. \nHope Is For the Hopeless is a record that emanates a profound subtlety; the arrangements can be as lush as they can tender with Woods understanding the need and importance of space\, sometimes allowing the honey-drenched tones of his vocals to be enough or to take a step back and let piano tinkles\, shuffling drums or the gentle fizz of a drum machine\, and thoughtful melodies to lead the way. It makes sense that attentive composition is so at the heart of what Woods does because he’s keen on avoiding the trappings and clichés that many others fall into. “Unless the songwriting’s phenomenal or the sound is totally out-there\, I find it increasingly hard to be engaged by a conventional guitar band arrangement\,” he says. “It’s not that I don’t love guitar bands\, I just think my quota is kinda full right now. My desire to get excited by music drives me to explore these different avenues to make the project as engaging to its audience as possible.” \nAlthough for a period\, having the audience in mind when making this record was a far away thought process as Woods holed up with intense focus to get the record finished and got lost in his own head for a while. “I was probably quite frantic at the time\,” he recalls. “Trying to distract myself from the life I’d just left and not freak out too much about the black hole that was the future. I was totally immersed\, I didn’t leave the house much.” \nThis approach can be felt rippling through the tracks too\, the opening “Back Down The Mountain”\, which glides to life with woozy\, swirling guitar lines and dry yet warm vocals\, is about “retreat and realising you need to get the hell out of somewhere\, and maybe even coming to the realisation that you should’ve done that long ago. It’s how I felt when I got on the flight out of Germany\, not knowing what I was headed towards. It’s tired and defeated\, although maybe there’s a hint of optimism.” \nElsewhere there’s tracks informed by the likes of Raymond Carver\, Leonard Cohen\, Lee & Nancy\, Death of a Salesman\, the poetry of Richard Hugo and a general sense of personal introspection\, reflection and the kind of life unpicking you can do once you’ve stopped moving. \nThe closing track\, unusually\, is the title track and despite the title’s less than optimistic wording in actual fact it captures this co-existence of Woods’ recent years\, plucking beauty and optimism from a period of tumultuous uncertainty. “It feels refreshing to me\, some welcome relief after the sadder themes of the previous few songs. Even if the lyrics aren’t exactly positive\, there’s an optimistic feel to the experience. And in that sense\, I see it as laying the ground for the next record. It acknowledges the themes of Hope is for the Hopeless and suggests that it’s time to move on.”

SUMMARY:ECHOBELLY + Duzzy Avocado
DESCRIPTION:ECHOBELLY + Guests\n\n7.30pm\, Thursday 10th November \nAfter the maelstrom years of Britpop and their ensuing success as Echobelly \, a series of experiences insued that rock’n’roll would call its own\, including death\, drugs\, theft and high court injunctions\, Glenn and Sonya came through the storm to a time of reflection\, re-positioning and reality: Where to go from here when the desire to write songs is stronger than ever but the business has changed considerably? Back to what you once knew. And that’s exactly what they did. A handful of acoustic shows took place in 2010 and two acoustic mini albums were released in 2011 and 2012\, with a full album planned to follow soon afterwards. \n\nBefore that could happen\, however\, Sonya and Glenn found themselves longing once again for the full-band experience and in 2015 Echobelly was resurrected. With a new-look line-up in place\, a live show at London’s Scala was announced. It sold out and was quoted by fans as being one of the best ever Echobelly shows. A proper return was in the pipe-line.\nEchobelly debuted in 1993 with their debut EP\, Bellyache\, on the independent Pandemonium label. The favourable response including gushing press reviews and sold out gigs ensured the securing of a recording contract with Epic via their subsidiary\, Rhythm King. Their first single\, was Insomniac and the album\, Everyone’s Got One\, reached number 8 in the Uk Album charts.\nEchobelly Band Photo\nAs their music received more airplay\, Echobelly won admiration from other artists as well. Madonna expressed interest in putting them on her Maverick label\, and R.E.M. requested the group as the opening act for their upcoming tour. The band returned to the studio in 1995 to create their next album\, On\, produced by Sean Slade and Paul Kolderie\, who had also produced Hole and Radiohead. The album created an interest worldwide and tour very successful world tours were put together.\nMadan’s lyrics often ventured into the darker side of life\, such as the milieu of gang culture addressed in the song King of the Kerb. “I wanted to challenge myself as a lyricist on a different level on this album\,” Madan said in Rolling Stone. “I want people to tell me what they thought the lyrics are about. I’m not a politician. I’m not interested in changing everybody around me. I’m interested in myself”.\nWhile many of the songs lamented the state of things\, others on the On album celebrated the endless possibilities of the human spirit. In Great Things\, Madan sang “I want to do great things/I don’t want to compromise/I want to know what love is/I want to know everything.” The album’s mostly optimistic feel provides an intriguing contrast with its serious subject matter. As one journalist wrote\, “Both music and lyrics examine the tension between order and liberty”. Listeners in the UK responded favourably to the album\, driving three singles from the release into the Top 30 of the UK Singles Chart. Sales of the album rose to over 180\,000 at the time\, in the UK.\nLegal problems interrupted the success of Echobelly in 1995 and 1996. The group also had disagreements with Rhythm King after the label moved to Arista. The band chose to stay with Epic. The release of their third album on Epic\, Lustra\, was issued in November 1997. A single from the album\, The World is Flat\, was released in August of that year\, with one more UK and European tour put together.\nA four-year hiatus was brought to an end in 2001 when the band returned with the Digit EP and their fourth album\, People Are Expensive which were released on their own Fry Up label. Two further singles\, Tell Me Why and Kali Yuga (a remixed version of the album track) followed.\nIn 2004 Echobelly released a fifth album\, Gravity Pulls – again through their own Fry Up label.\nAfter a period of witnessing the whole music scene change around them\, the band went their separate ways while Glenn and Sonya remained working together and released two acoustic albums under the name Calm of Zero with an acoustic tour around the UK.\nIt was the response of the sold out Scala show in October 2015 that they decided to once more make a return into the music field with a new band line up and the new album\, Anarchy and Alchemy\, which was released in 2017.\nFive years on and they’re still out there and gigging\nIan Kemp

SUMMARY:Fake Turins & Human Music ***EVENT CANCELLED***
DESCRIPTION:North London outfit Fake Turins explore the psychedelic strut of New York City in the 70’s\, using their strength in numbers to provide an immersive experience\, the 11-piece unit explore noise\, disco and funk through an unrelenting groove.\nFake Turins have been tipped across the board by press\, summed up by So Young Magazine as\, “lyrically subversive yet audibly untouchable”\, with DIY noting their “cyclical\, propulsive dancefloor groove”\, and by CLASH as\, “a truly multi-faceted piece of music [that] feels like the entry point into Fake Turins’ extraordinary world.” Radio support from Steve Lamacq (BBC 6Music)\, Gemma Bradley (BBC Radio 1)\, John Kennedy (Radio X) and Amazing Radio on both sides of the Atlantic has seen the band’s stock rise.\nThe band were longlisted for Glastonbury Emerging Talent\, played their first two festivals abroad in Left Of The Dial and Klomppop and released a string of well-received singles and their debut EP entitled ‘Time Flowers Now’ – a remix EP followed with a stand out mix by Leo Zero of live favourite ‘Down!’.\n\nFollowing three back-to-back sold out London headline shows\, including a 350 cap warehouse show at Electrowerkz\, the band will embark on their first UK headline tour in 2022 alongside festival slots at This Must Be The Place\, Manchester Psych Fest\, Float Along\, and Rockaway Beach.
