SUMMARY:Benjamin Francis Leftwich
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Francis Leftwich + GuestsSunday 10th November 2024Esquires\, Bedford\n\nWe’re really pleased to have finally snagged a date with the wonderful\, Benjamin Francis Leftwich as part of his UK tour in November.\nArtistic transformation is often associated with a blast of fanfare – the dramatic unveiling of a new look\, or lofty announcement of the revelation that prompted such a change. In the case of Benjamin Francis Leftwich\, reinvention transpires with significantly more subtlety on his latest album\, Some Things Break.\n\n“It feels like a new voice\, in a way.” the York-born artist says. “I guess a more human and perhaps a more surrendered voice. Learning to hold on to certain things and let go of others with as much grace as possible…I feel like I’m hiding less on this record. Ultimately i think it’s a record about a kind of slow acceptance that some things break and for me – sometimes that’s necessary for healing”\n\nFans of Leftwich’s earlier work will associate him with a rich but pared-back acoustic singer-songwriter sound. Hit songs such as “Atlas Hands” and “Shine” – both from his Top 40 debut Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm – were infused with a charming wistfulness\, and the yearning for sweet escape. Fans and critics alike were struck by this new artist’s disarming honesty; his lyrics were lauded for their candidness and vulnerability.

SUMMARY:Evil Blizzard + Thee Alcoholics
DESCRIPTION:A gig 9 years in the making – that’s how long we’ve been asking\, cajoling and…begging them to come south to Bedford.\nPreston’s Evil Blizzard are truly an enigma. Four bass players\, a singing drummer. An array of rubber masks that will give both children and adults sleepless nights for days on end – they are the most ingenious and charismatic live experience on the music scene today! \nEvil Blizzard delve into many musical wells. Mixing their musical heritage from early Sabbath\, Dub & krautrock through to more modern and diverse contemporaries such as Hawkwind\, Public Image Limited and Killing Joke (the latter two even personally asking for Evil Blizzard to open for them). It appears that no musical genre is sate from their reach. \nBlizzard have not only won over some very hard-line partisan crowds\, but they have also gone on to conquer such music festivals as Kendal Calling\, Super-sonic\, Rebellion\, The Great British Alternative Music Festival\, Supernormal and The International Festival of Psychedelia in Liverpool. \nSupport from Thee Alcoholics \nTickets up at seetickets.com and available in Slide and Esquires.

SUMMARY:The Bug Club + British Birds
DESCRIPTION:THE BUG CLUB + British Birds7:30pm\, Sat 9th NovemberEsquires\, Bedford\n\nWe are really excited to be bringing one of our favourite bands\, The Bug Club\, back to Esquires in November.\n\nFormed in 2016 in the little-known rock n’ roll hotbed that is Caldicot\, Monmouthshire\, The Bug Club’s name does a good job of introducing the band and their music. Sold-out tours across the UK and in Europe paved the way for 2023 which will see the band play further afield to an ever-growing loyal fanbase. The band released their second studio album ‘Rare Birds: Hour of Song’ in Oct 23 supported with tours in Europe\, UK and North America.\n\n2024 will see further album releases and global touring with announcements coming very soon. The band have just completed a successful UK tour selling out Village Underground in London as well as many regional shows.\n\nTickets on sale at 10am from Friday 10th May from Seetickets and available locally from Slide Record Shop and Esquires Bar.

SUMMARY:Smoove & Turrell
DESCRIPTION:The story of Smoove & Turrell began in the post millennium North East of England with a group of working class lads and a shared passion for soul. Smoove had met keyboardist Mike Porter through the local music scene in Newcastle and recruited him for his ‘Smoove Live’ project for the label Acid Jazz. Around Mike’s house one day they overheard a neighbour singing sublime melodies in his garage with friends which turned out to be none other than a young John Turrell practicing in a band called ‘The Stevies’. After a couple of further sessions ‘scouting’ him they finally knocked on the door and had a chat and hit it off straight away.\n\nAfter the trio performed several gigs together with various other guest musicians it was agreed they would create some new material and so they started to write and arrange a clutch of tracks that Smoove would record and produce. Their first track was the now classic ‘I Can’t Give You Up’ recorded at Mike Porter’s house as his Hammond Organ was immovably wedged in his utility room.\n\nThe first few tracks were received with a rapturous response and their newfound northern soul style demanded that a Smoove & Turrell live band was formed so they swiftly filled out their ranks with a crack team of like-minded Geordie musicians. Now as a full soul band they were creatively allowed to really stretch their legs both live and in the studio and their debut Antique Soul was released on Jalapeno Records.\n\nIt was in fellow soul head Craig Charles that they found their first radio champion as he supported them heavily on ‘The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show’ which was a kick-starter for their assault on national radio eventually landing Radio 2 record of the week twice and a playlist on 6 Music.\n\n7 albums later\, the band have gone from strength to strength.\nThe uplifting intensity of the dancefloor anthems (of which there are many) is matched by the emotional sway of the slower tracks including two beautiful tributes to lost family.\n——\nTickets go on sale Friday 31st May from Seetickets.com:https://www.seetickets.com/…/bedford-esquires/3042896\nTickets available from local outlets from Wednesday 5th November\nThis is a 14+ ages show – under 16s with an adult

SUMMARY:The Crazy World of Arthur Brown + Omnivibes
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be bringing the God of Hellfire to Esquires for his debut performance at the venue!\n\n \nArthur Brown is synonymous with his 1968 hit “Fire” and the Hammond-driven “Crazy World” line-up which spawned it. However\, in 1970\, he returned with a new project: the prog-festival freak-show Kingdom Come followed by a varied solo career. Their sound is a heavy mix of Rock n Roll and Electronica fuelled by Daance Floor Rhythms\, driving Bass and a huge wall of Synthesizers and Guitars\, all topped off with soaring anthemic Vocals and melodies. \nCiting bands like Primal Scream\, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club\, The Stooges and dance acts like The Chemical Brothers & Underworld as major influences\, H.Y.M have managed to combine elements of both Rock n Roll and Dance / Electronica into their immense sound. \nAfter writing songs & developing their new sound they approached legendary Producer Jagz Kooner (who has worked with the likes of Primal Scream\, Kasabian\, Oasis as well as a host of Dance luminairies such as Andrew Weatherall\, The Sabres Of Paradise & Soulwax ) to take care of production duties on all their songs. Jagz was instantly hooked after hearing the album demos and totally blown away when he saw the band in rehearsals. He commented that they were one of the best live bands he’d ever seen and said the music was the perfect amalgamation of what he best described as “Electronic Rock n Roll”. \nSo far H.Y.M have self funded and released 4 singles of which 2 have had sporadic plays on Radio X. John Kennedy made their single ” Better Together” an Exposure Hot One on his show on Radio X as well. The huge potential of syncs for H.Y.M music was highlighted when Scotts Menswear used their debut single ” You Thought I Was Dead ( But Baby Im Just getting Started) ” on a viral social media campaign for their clothing range. The band have just released their debut 4 track E.P entitled “ The Shock Of The Future” . SUMMARY:THE SKIDS + Spear Of Destiny
DESCRIPTION:THE SKIDS + Spear Of Destiny \n7pm\, Weds 6th November\, Bedford Esquires \nWe are very pleased to announce THE SKIDS and Spear Of Destiny will be warming up for their UK tour at Bedford Esquires on Weds 6th November.  Both headliners in their own right and selling out the venue in their own right at Esquires the band were last paired together in Bedford at the  Corn Exchange in 2018 which saw over 700 people in attendance.  With Esquires being the smallest venue on the tour we would advise picking tickets up nice & early for this date. \nTickets priced £27.50 are on sale now from Seetickets and will be available in person from Slide Record Shop and Esquires Bar (booking fee free) from Fri 2nd August. \n THE SKIDS \n“Memories fade but some linger for a reason. The Skids was the definitive part of my early life. A brilliant adventure into the world of creativity and adulthood. I was a kid when I joined the band in 1977 – 16 years old. By the time the adventure had run aground I was a dazed and confused young man. We were fearless in the beginning\, always trying new things and not afraid to be different in a musical world that was beginning to sound very derivative and safe. Contrary to the reports from people who were never near the centre of the band\, Stuart Adamson and I got on very well – in fact for a long time we were very close. I enjoyed writing with him – he was generous and incredibly adaptable to my unmusical ideas. The Skids were not just another punk band – we were creatively ambitious as well as being close to the core beliefs of our hard-won fans. But most importantly we loved playing live. Taking these memories and replanting them into 2017 has not been easy. How do you do it? How should it sound? Are we little more than a tribute band? These were the questions rattling around my head as I tried to find a way to celebrate the bands 40th anniversary last year. The answers ended up being very simple – Don’t over think it – Just do it. Enjoy every minute of it. Play the songs like it might be the last time. Give it everything. And then……. there’s the new stuff!!! The beginning of something new rather than the end of something old.  Enter DESTINATION DUSSELDORF” \nRichard Jobson \nThe Skids were at the heart of the punk scene in Scotland and took their music to London where they were signed by Virgin records. They made 4 albums and had numerous hit singles including Into the Valley\, The Saints are Coming\, Masquerade and Working for the Yankee Dollar. \nAfter the cover version of The Saints are Coming by U2 and Green Day the remaining band members reformed and played to large audiences all over the UK including iconic London venues such as The Albert Hall and The Roundhouse as well as Barrowlands in Glasgow. Their recently released album Destination Dusseldorf went to no.1 in the vinyl charts. \nSPEAR OF DESTINY \nFormed in 1983 after the demise of Kirk Brandon’s post punk iconic rockers THEATRE OF HATE. (Brandon had also\, before TOH\, been the main man in every punk rockers favourite band of that era The Pack) \nThe current line up of Spear is the longest serving to date and features Adrian Portas (New Model Army / Sex Gang Children)\, Craig Adams (Sisters of Mercy / The Cult / The Mission) and Phil Martini (Jim Jones and the Righteous Mind) on drums. During 2019 the line up was boasted by Saxophonist Clive Osborne. Long time Brandon collaborator Steve Allen-Jones completes the band line up on keyboards for 2022. \nPost Pandemic has seen SOD play some fabulous club shows and festivals including sell out shows at the iconic 100 Club in London\, Manchester Ritz and Glasgow Oran Mor. SOD’s performances at Sign of the Times\, Rebellion and Kubix festivals have heralded fantastic reviews “Festival Stealing Dream set” wrote The Northern Echo. \nLate 2024 will see Spear take to the road with long term friend Richard Jobson who will fronting a revitalised line up of the much loved Post Punk Heroes THE SKIDS. This amazing line will be playing close to 30 shows across the UK in November and December 2024\, NOT to be missed. \nComments on Kirk Brandon and Spear of Destiny: \nThe BBC’s Jeremy Vine: “@kirkbrandon is one of our greatest musical geniuses” \nJohn Robb’s Louder Than War: “Spear of Destiny are criminally underrated and are one of Britain’s best\, Boys Own\, punch the air\, grandiose Rock’nRoll bands. \nMojo wrote: “Kirk Brandon is on of the UK’s best kept secrets”. \nOn SOD’s previous studio album ‘31’(Thirty-One).\nBBC Radio’s Jools Holland: “possibly [Spear of Destiny’s] best album in 20 years” \nLouder Than War: 9/10 Brandon puts his all into every song with epic bombast\, coming across as a tragic rock n roll anti-hero. He is the Wagner of rock n roll. And the haircut’s still pretty cool. \nAberdeen Voice: Thirty years together makes for flawless musicianship\, a unique sound\, and some remarkable riffs and harmonies. \n www.skidsofficial.com / http://www.kirkbrandon.com

SUMMARY:HAYSEED DIXIE
DESCRIPTION:HAYSEED DIXIE + GUESTS7:30pm Friday 18th October\, Esquires Bedford\n\nWe’re very pleased to be bringing ‘maximum rockgrass’ back to Bedford for the first time in over half a decade\, when Hayseed Dixie return to Esquires main stage!\n\nHayseed Dixie began one innocent Summer day in 2000 when John Wheeler and Mike Daly drank roughly enough whiskey to float a battleship from the Florida Coast over to Portugal and back and decided to play around in John’s studio. Having spent the previous few years touring around with assorted country hat-acts\, John had assembled a proper pile of recording equipment.\n\nThus when he and Mike discovered in their drunken epiphany that the Lost Highway of Reverend Hank Williams and the Highway to Hell of Bishop Bon Scott were indeed the same identical stretch of tarmac\, they were well and truly prepared to document this revelation in situ.\nSpecial guests to be announced.\n\nTickets are on sale now from Seetickets\, Slide and Esquires bar.
