SUMMARY:Jah Wobble & The Invaders of the Heart - live at Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents… \nJAH WOBBLE & THE INVADERS OF THE HEART + GUESTS \nLIVE AT BEDFORD ESQUIRES\, FRIDAY 14TH OCTOBER \nThe one and only! Jah Wobble began his musical career at 18 as a founder member of Public Image Limited. His heavy\, hypnotic bass lines defined the post punk era and have influenced many musicians over the last 30 odd years. \nJohn Wardle originally met John Lydon\, John Grey and Sid Vicious at Kingsway College\, London\, in 1973. It was Vicious who originally nicknamed John “Jah Wobble” after a drunken binge\, and would also loan him his first bass guitar.\nDuring the heyday of punk rock in the mid to late 70s\, Wardle earned himself the reputation of being something of a wildman. His original introduction to the bass stemmed from his long-term obsession with dub reggae music. Combined with the D.I.Y. punk ethos\, Wardle embraced punk and reggae\, and in the process\, created an original rock/reggae hybrid of his own. \nAfter discovering his fascination with the bass guitar\, Lydon asked Wardle to join Public Image Limited (aka PiL) during the spring of 1978. Wardle’s distinctive ‘low end’ bass immediately put PiL on the map and became the backbone of the band. ” The band’s debut album Public Image Limited included the band’s eponymous first Top 10 hit single. \nAfter two magnificent albums\, including the mighty Metal Box \, Wardle became increasingly disillusioned by the music scene and the politics of the band and their reluctance to play live\, and eventually split from the band in mid-1980. \nAfter PiL\, and before the genre became in vogue\, Wardle became a well respected session and solo artist\, with a genuine passion for Eastern and Global music. Over the past 37 years he has worked with a diverse range of musicians and music genres\, way too many to mention here. \nIn 1986\, after a long battle with alcohol\, Wardle unexpectedly walked away from the music scene to work for London Underground. By 1987 due to the repeated prompting of his friend and former band mate\, percussionist Neville Murray\, Wobble reformed The Invaders of the Heart. Armed with a live recording of a concert he had made with a new line up of musicians during a European tour in 1988\, Wobble travelled to New York City’s New Music Seminar in 1989 to get back into the music industry. Wobble was able to secure an eleventh-hour record deal with a small European record label. The live album\, Without Judgement\, recorded in the Netherlands was released in November 1989 and successfully revived Wobble’s career. \nHe went on to record\, for East-West Records\, the Mercury nominated Rising Above Bedlam which was released in 1991. By 1994 Wobble was back at Island Records\, where he enjoyed commercial and artistic success in the early eighties. The result was the ground breaking Take Me To God album\, that featured luminaries such as Baaba Maal\, Chaka Demus and Pliers\, Jaki Leiberzeit from Can et al. Close on the heels of recording Heaven and Earth with longtime friend and collaborator Bill Laswell in New York\, along with Pharoah Sanders\, Wardle produced and played on an album with Brian Eno called Spinner. It was around that time that Wardle fled major record company constraints and returned to a more experimental jand non-commercial sounding records. In 1997 he started up his own independent record label\, ’30 Hertz Records’\, and released a long series of critically acclaimed records\, such as The Inspiration of William Blake and The Celtic Poets with Ronnie Drew of Dubliners fame. \nHaving overcome his alcohol problem in the mid-eighties\, Wardle is now a reformed character. His wild man days are now long behind him\, and he is now a dedicated family man with a documented interest in spirituality\, and in 2000 received a B.A in Music and Philosophy. Until 2009 he wrote regular book reviews for the Independent on Sunday. Since then he has written book reviews for The Times newspaper. In 2008\, accompanied by his wife Zi Lan Liao\, he toured with a large group of Chinese performers (‘mask changers’ and dancers as well as musicians). He also released an album that documented that project called ‘Chinese Dub’ which won the Songlines magazine world Music award. Also in 2008\, he made a very well received radio documentary about his old friend Sid Vicious for BBC Radio 3. In 2009\, Serpents Tail published his acclaimed autobiography ‘Memoirs of a Geezer’. Since that time Wardle has made a ‘Japanese Dub’ album and a ‘Jah Wobble and the Modern Jazz Ensemble album. He has toured extensively with both projects. In 2011 he performed Glastonbury. \nIn 2011\, Wobble collaborated with Julie Campbell\, alias Warp Records artist LoneLady in a project called Psychic Life. The eponymous debut album Psychic Life was inspired by disco\, post-punk and psychogeography\, and released by Cherry Red Records on 14 November 2011. The album was well received and the single ‘Tightrope’ and its accompanying video prompted a warm response from critics and punters alike. \nIn early 2012 Jah Wobble briefly reunited with his old Pil sparring partner Keith Levine to perform ‘Metal Box In Dub’ . They played various european venues as well as Fuji Rock festival in July 2012. This was followed by the release of a four-song\, eponymous EP. An album entitled Yin & Yang was released in November 2012. \nWobble has also collaborated with the British ambient group Marconi Union\, the results of which were released as an album called Anomic on 30 Hertz records in June 2013. In October 2013\, 30 Hertz Records released ‘Odds & Sods & Epilogues’ an illustrated book/CD of Jah Wobble’s poetry.\nIn 2015 Cherry Red Records released ‘Redux’ a sumptuous 6 CD Box Set that spans nearly four decades of Wobble’s music. It includes new tracks ‘Merry Go Round’ and ’Let’s Go Psycho’. \nIn May 2015 Jah Wobble & The Invaders Of The Heart embarked on an extensive six month UK tour. \nIn 2016 Jah Wobble intends to release a new Invaders of the Heart album via a PledgeMusic campaign. \nTickets are sale priced £12.50 in advance from Seetickets online and in person from Esquires Bar\, Planet Boutique Bedford and Marios Hair Design Kempston

SUMMARY:Wille & The Bandits + guests
DESCRIPTION:Wille & the Bandits + guests \nLive at Bedford Esquires – Sunday 9th October at 7.30pm \nEssentially Wille and the Bandits is a classic blues rock three piece much in the vain of Cream or The Jimi Hendrix experience. But in a similar way to how these bands pushed the genre in their time\, Wille and the Bandits try to take their sound beyond what is expected of such a traditional line up. \nThe use of more bizarre instrumentation and eclectic influences in the song writing often pushes them more into a world music or progressive category. Having toured with artists such as Deep Purple through to the John Butler trio and played major festivals across Europe\, the band seem to leave an equally astounding impression on audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds with their energetic and soulful performances. \nThey have received great critical acclaim\, being voted in the top ten must see bands at Glastonbury 2014 by BBC Radio 1 and reaching number 2 in the UK blues chart with their first single on downloads alone. Now touring their third independently released studio album Wille and the Bandits fan base\, repertoire of sounds\, styles and innovation seems to be growing at an exponential rate. \nThe band are praised in the press for their albums; bursting at the seams with textures\, originality and soul. Rock legends such as Ian Paice\, Joe Bonamassa and Francis Rossi have also praised the band’s musicianship and their unique edge to Rock and Blues. \nIt’s rare to find a band as dynamic as Wille and the Bandits\, one that is just as comfortable and as impressive at both ends of the sonic spectrum. In the modern age of disposable music it is refreshing to hear a band that still value the art of creating albums and who continue to bring new instruments and ideas into their songwriting rather than settling for a tried and tested formula. Ten seconds of Youtube will not scratch the surface of the band’s sound and message; this is a band that is very much about discovery and one best experienced LIVE!. \n“Love the soul in their music” – Bob Harris \n“Wille & the Bandits are taking roots music to a new level” – Rootstime Magazine \n“Wille is a superb slide player\, I love what these guys are doing” – Joe Bonamassa \n“These boys can really groove” – Francis Rossi\, Status Quo \n“These boys can groove and sing like whiskey angels and it doesn’t take long to realise why they belong on the festival circuit.” -Glastonbury festival \n“This incredibly talented band excels in playing not just one or two musical styles but in fact focus on several genres to an extremely high quality.” – Maverick Magazine \nTickets priced £10 in advance are on sale online from Seetickets and in person from Esquires Bar and Planet Boutique in Bedford and Marios Hair design in Kempston.

SUMMARY:The Pad Presents / L.A Salami / Holy Molys - Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:THE PAD PRESENTS\nhttp://www.thepadpresents.com \nL.A SALAMI + Guests \nEHMEHGERD! Excited to say the least that L.A. Salami\, who dropped our fave tune of the summer ‘The City Nowadays’ is coming to Esquires for an intimate warm up show before his Pad Presents stage performance at Levels Festival in Luton the next day. \nListen to this. NOW.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBEZ7jiEhMc \nTickets are available £5 advance online only from Seetickets here: http://www.seetickets.com/event/l-a-salami/bedford-esquires/1024569 \nFull support line up to be announced. \n———————— \nL.A. Salami isn’t kidding when he tells you he has a backlog of songs. \n“I had all these albums already written in my head\,” begins the London-born singer/songwriter/poet\, “and I wanted to make an EP that took a track from each of those albums – that’s why The Prelude EP has nine tracks\,” he says of the 2014 release\, the follow up to his 2013 debut\, the Another Shade Of Blue EP. So\, to be clear: Salami has nine albums already written. \nNor is he over-egging the pudding when he reveals his original plans for his first (to be released) album\, the energetic\, rousing poetical\, polemical\, “postmodern blues” and urban folk tour de force that is Dancing With Bad Grammar. \n“One track\, ‘Nazis On The Northern Line’\, was going to be on this album\, which I wanted to have 24 tracks\,” he admits\, which was probably a bit too ambitious even for a label as forward-thinking as Sunday Best. The boutique outfit\, the home of Rob Da Bank and David Lynch\, signed Salami in 2015\, two years after he drew the attention of fashion designer Christopher Bailey and was booked to perform on the Burberry Acoustic platform for new artists. \n“But when I realised it couldn’t be that long\,” he continues\, “I moved ‘Nazis…’ back to Back To The City\, which is actually my favourite album. Then there’s an album called The Bootmakers which is more rock’n’roll stuff…” To\, again\, be clear: this biography is about Dancing With Bad Grammar. And to re-reiterate: it will be the first L.A. Salami album to be released. \nNor is he engaging in false modesty when he tells us he’s new to all this – he only started playing guitar a few years ago\, having received an acoustic as a present on his 21st birthday. He also plays harmonica\, a choice inspired by Bob Dylan\, “and a bit of piano”. That’s not to say he’s not been a writer for some time. \n“I wrote my first script when I was seven – I still plan to film it\,” admits this all-round cultural sponge obsessed with cinema from an early age\, “then from there I got into writing poetry\, then I wrote music in my head. I just loved rock stars and the romantic idea of expressing yourself that way. But no one got me an instrument because no one could afford it\,” he says\, a passing reference to a challenging childhood spent shuttling between a foster family in Kent and his single-parent mother in London. “But then when my friend gave me that guitar\, I just started learning how to play it by writing songs.” \nAnd nor\, finally\, is L.A. Salami having us on when he insists the name’s no stage moniker. Of Nigerian descent\, his full\, real name is Lookman Adekunle Salami. \nSomething else to clarify: don’t be wrongfooted by all this talk of ambition and precocity. L.A. Salami is no showboating show-off. Rather\, he’s mild-mannered and effortlessly stylish\, with the warm charisma and honeyed voice of an impassioned original. \nIn the tradition of the fuss-free\, no-hassle\, DIY troubadour\, he recorded Dancing With Bad Grammar in one week (“I wanted to get it live; I’m not interested in the tracking thing”) at Urchin Studios in Hackney\, London\, with engineer Dan Cox and producer Matt Ingram. He liked the sound of Laura Marling’s last lbum (2015’s Short Movie)\, also recorded at Urchin\, and he liked the sound of Cox and Ingram\, to whom he was introduced by Lianne La Havas\, an old friend whom he’s supported on tour. \nIn all the right ways Salami is as conversationally introvert as he is musically extrovert. A gentle soul with a sharp observational eye\, he prefers to pack his teeming thoughts and fears and opinions and observations into his brilliantly wrought lyrics and boldly titled songs. \nTake opening track ‘Going Mad As The Street Bins’. A Beck-meets-Kate Tempest jam (complete with rootling Sixties organ and crashing riffs)\, Salami uses his soulful croon to suggest that\, “Jesus is a nifty type of mother…” \n“You know when you see a packed bin\, stuff hanging out of it\, because people have just casually chucked stuff in there? I think people in the modern city feel that. You’re just bombarded with stuff\, there’s rubbish in your head\, and it can just drive you crazy\, especially in London.” \nAll that said\, this deep-thinking artist finds the teeming lives\, sights and noises of city inspiring. To Salami\, there’s art in that trash. \n“I’ve always liked urban environments in general\, in terms of poetry as well. It’s a perfectly natural setting – if it wasn’t\, it wouldn’t have evolved – so it’s important to engage with it. It is depressing at times\, but that’s life. I’m completely urbanised; I can’t imagine living outside the city for too long. I need to feel the lights and the sounds and the anger!” he smiles. “And it’s full of joy as well.” \nAs much is apparent on ‘The City Nowadays’\, the first single from Dancing With Bad Grammar. It’s an energetic tumble of ideas and influences\, mixing beat poetry\, chain-gang blues\, hip hop and pithy one-liners\, with L.A. riffing on a range of modern stresses and signifiers\, from terrorist paranoia to high-cholesterol\, from Jeremy Corbyn to the death of cinema at the hands of over-enthusiastic\, under-discerning critics. \n“It’s true!” he exclaims (quietly). “You see a film advertised on the side of buses and you know it’s shit even though it’s got four stars. It’s being sold to us\, and it’s kinda insulting – it dilutes and ruins art… he says\, sounding like a ponce…” \nBut refreshingly\, L.A. doesn’t sound weary or cynical when he sings\, raps or recites these thoughts. \n“Well\, depends on what mood I’m in\,” he concedes with a smile. “But ultimately I’m an optimist. I’m a realist as well\, but I’m an optimist in life and love. I’m sure people in the Fifties thought the Twenties and Thirties were the good old days. When Lou Reed was in The Velvet Underground he thought The Beatles were trash. It’s all about your perspective. \n“I call my music postmodern blues. I’ve always loved the blues\, and I think of this album as my version of blues songs. ‘The City Nowadays’ is like that. Hip hop is modern blues; it came out of the same sort of stresses and social dynamics of African-Americans feeling oppressed\, and expression coming out of that. Then it’s caught by the rest of society and transformed into a different kind of thing.” \nSo there’s defiance and exuberance\, too\, most pointedly on ‘I Wear This Because Life Is War’\, a galloping song with a fierce energy and momentum\, not to mention an eye-popping vocal. “It’s just a simple blues song\, born of the idea of wanting to shout over an audience in an open mic night that isn’t listening to you – which is life\, isn’t it?” he laughs. \nEqually\, even on the closing song\, an eight-minute meditation titled ‘My Thoughts\, They Too Will Tire’\, Salami sounds hopeful\, not defeated. Gently played but deftly painted\, it’s a kaleidoscope of images and characters that Salami would\, typically\, rather not unpick too much. Much better for listeners to jump in and enjoy the trip on their terms. \n“I wanted to write a song that was about everything\, really just tying everything together. It took a while to gather my thoughts\, but then it just spewed out. The words came first\, then a rough melody\, then the guitar part a month later. I didn’t overthink it.” \nElsewhere\, Salami’s love of and appreciation for key corners of Sixties and Seventies music shine through. ‘Day To Day’\, on which he plays harmonica like he was born to it\, is the most Dylan-esque. Then\, ‘Why Don’t You Help Me’ and ‘I Can’t Slow Her Down’ are beautiful folk songs in the Nick Drake tradition (“I love him; his story used to break my heart”)\, this brand new guitarist playing with astonishing skill. \nThey’re cornerstone examples of something else Salami does with uncommon ease: write songs that are complex but not convoluted. He nods at this assessment. \n“When I was first starting to play I had a philosophy: the more simple the music\, the more engaging it is. I still have that a bit. If the songs are music-heavy\, but you want it to revolve around the lyrics\, something gets lost. You can’t engage with the words so well. Personally\, I think you go by your strengths\, and words are my strength\, so they take first place. They have to sit on top of everything\, or be the lead. If that’s where the power comes from\, don’t be ashamed of that.” \nIt all adds up to an album brimming with ideas and melodicism\, poetry and punch\, nods to where we’ve come from but passion for where we’re going. It’s the sound of a young man abroad in the city\, hopping the Tube\, dodging street bins\, shouting in pubs and soaking up the stuff of the streets\, from gutters to rooftops and back again. \n“I want to portray modern life using the past as a vehicle\,” concludes this blazing new talent. “I love Sixties and Seventies music\, that’s where my heart is. But I don’t want it to sound of the past\, I want it to speak of now. Any great art does that – acknowledges the past but lives only in the present. If I can do that\,” says affable L.A. Salami with another easy smile\, “it’s a job well done.” \nL.A Salami’s debut single ‘The City Nowadays’ is out June 24th.
