SUMMARY:The Orielles + Thick Drizzle
DESCRIPTION:The Orielles + Thick Drizzle \n7:30pm\, Sunday 5th May\, Bedford Esquires \nWe are pleased to welcome The Orielles back to Bedford Esquires on Bank Holiday Sunday 5th May. \nSince forming in the West Yorkshire town of Halifax\, over a decade ago whilst still in their early teens\, the Orielles have journeyed from lo-fi DIY indie origins (Silver Dollar Moment\, Heavenly Recordings 2018) to Stereolab and A Certain Ratio inspired avant-pop (Disco Volador\, Heavenly Recordings 2020)\, even directing and scoring their own experimental film (La Vita Olistica\, 2021). \nNow\, with new album Tableau (Heavenly Recordings\, 2022)\, the Orielles have created their first genuinely contemporary record – an experimental double album self-produced in collaboration with producer Joel Anthony Patchett (King Krule\, Tim Burgess). In doing so\, the Orielles have utilised holistic jazz practices\, oblique 21st century electronica\, experimental 1960s tape loop methods\, otherworldly AutoTuned vocal sounds\, the downer dub of Burial\, Sonic Youth’s focus on improvisation and feedback\, and Brian Eno’s legendary Oblique Strategy cards. \nAt the end of 2020\, the Orielles – vocalist and bassist Esmé Hand-Halford\, drummer Sidonie Hand-Halford and guitarist Henry Carlyle-Wade – regrouped to rehearse in Manchester\, the city that the band have made their home across the last five years. When all of the band’s live dates to promote their second album were scrapped due to the pandemic\, the group instead spent 2020 creating La Vita Olistica\, a high-concept art film directed and written by the Hand-Halford sisters which they toured in cinemas across the following year. \n“When we’ve talked about being influenced by film\, people think we mean directors but it’s not that at all” explains Esmé\, “it’s about trying to make those ebbs\, and flows\, and creating tension.” Ideas from scoring that film was beginning to filter into the band’s rehearsals – this would be the beginning of a series of creative breakthroughs that would result in Tableau. \nOne such breakthrough came when the Orielles were booked to host a monthly show on Soho Radio. Broadcasts quickly became impromptu research and development sessions for the ideas that would feed into the album. \nGuest support comes from Thick Drizzle a solo-side project of South London band Dry Cleaning’s Tom Dowse. In this project\, Dowse weaves finger-picked guitar in the vein of Karen Dalton and John Fahey\, through his sweeping vocals bringing to mind contemporaries like Richard Dawson and Mount Eerie/The Microphones. \nHis songs are a cosmology of folklore and personal myth that conjure a sense of place both real and imagined. Augmented by soundscapes sculpted using tape loops and field recordings\, Thick Drizzle seeks to bring to life a world of its own. \nTickets priced £14 are on sale from Thursday 22nd Feb from Seetickets and in person from Slide Record Shop and Esquires Bar.

SUMMARY:CASH – PAYIN’ RESPECT TO THE MAN IN BLACK
DESCRIPTION:CASH – PAYIN’ RESPECT TO THE MAN IN BLACK\n7:30pm Saturday 4th May\, Bedford Esquires (show starts 8:15pm)\n\nThe mighty CASH (Johnny Cash Tribute) returns to Bedford Esquires for his first show in 7 years at Bedford Esquires on Sat 4th May.\nAs is so often the case with unique artists\, it takes another one to fully appreciate them. Having lived the life and music of Johnny Cash and other country heroes who came before and since\, Ben\, aka CASH\, has effortlessly recreated the sound\, vibe and appeal of the master himself.\nThere’s two types of people in this world: Those who like Johnny Cash and those that don’t know a damn thing about music. CASH are dedicated to making sure as many people as possible get into the know…\n\nGrowing up on a farm in Yorkshire\, music has always been central to Ben’s life. With a Grandfather who was a big band drummer\, and a Father with a vast musical collection enthusiastically shared with whoever would listen\, music was everywhere. However\, it was the music of a certain JR Cash that managed that rare feat of stopping a young and energetic Ben in his tracks. It gave him that first “light bulb” moment\, as he recalls\,\n“I had heard music before\, of course. But this voice. His voice. I mean it literally brought me to a standstill. The words too. They just struck a chord with me somewhere and I really felt I understood what he was saying. I got this man\, even as a child I could feel it”.\n“JR has always been rough around the edges and I don’t know why but I always felt I was born with an outlaw’s approach to life. Not that I was out there robbing trains or anything\, but it was more of a mentality; just something inside of me really”.\n\nBeing a drummer first\, it took a bit of coaxing from family and friends before Ben decided to take the Cash alter-ego seriously.\n“I have always felt a bit weird about pretending to be anyone else other than myself\, so the concept of being Johnny Cash didn’t really appeal”\, says Ben. “People were continuously telling me I had to do something with all this Cash stuff\, so I decided I would start taking it more seriously\, but the word tribute was key. I would pay my respects to the man by getting his stuff out there again; reaching out to established and new fans\, but in no way would I try to be him. That is just not doable in my eyes\, so I don’t want people thinking I think I am him. Cos I don’t!”\n\nTickets priced £14 go on sale on Friday 6th October from Seetickets online and are available in person from Slide Record Shop and Bedford Esquires Bar.

SUMMARY:A Certain Ratio + Ellen Beth Abdi
DESCRIPTION:The Craufurd Arms and The Pad Presents….. \n\nA CERTAIN RATIO + Special Guests – 7:30pm FRIDAY 3rd MAY 2024\n\nA CERTAIN RATIO – IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS – Live 2024\n\nA CERTAIN RATIO have announced details of a new album\, produced by Dan Carey\, and an extensive UK tour for spring 2024.\nIt All Comes Down To This\, their thirteenth studio album\, will be released on 19 April 2024.\n\nThe new album is the purest distillation of their essential sound ever committed to tape\, and the first time they have recorded as just the core trio of principle band members – multi-instrumentalists Jez Kerr\, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson.\n\nThe core trio will be joined on bass by Viv Griffin for the live shows\, and the band intend to play the album in its glorious entirety\, an endeavour they have never previously attempted\, underscoring the unrivalled cohesion that this particular body of work possesses. Many jewels from the past will also adorn the set lists too\, and\, like ever\, reworked and remodelled\, the band proud of their past\, rather than dependent upon It.\n\nAs a snapshot of where A Certain Ratio stand in 2024\, It All Comes Down to This is a towering testament to their staying power. For a band whose path has intersected with the lives of Joy Division\, The Fall\, Talking Heads\, Madonna and Grace Jones\, to now be immersed in their most creative and prolific period since the early 1980s\, puts the great majority of their contemporaries to shame. But then again\, when you have always been preoccupied with laying the groundwork for your next steps\, you’re unlikely ever to derive much satisfaction from standing still.\n\n£25 Adv from Slide Record Shop\, Esquires Bar and online from Seetickets

DESCRIPTION:Saturday 27th April 2024 \nEsquires – Bedford \nAlmost nothing is a new band from Scottish musician and writer Roddy Woomble. \nDeviating from his indie and folk roots\, this exciting new project ploughs into a more synth-pop direction. We’ve been hammering it in the office and it’s bloomin’ great. Roddy also be doing a set of solo material\, so it’s almost two gigs for the price of one!\nThe debut album was written and recorded throughout 2021/22 in collaboration with four different producers – Scott Paterson (Protection)\, Andrew Wasylck\, Le Junk\, and Luciano Rossi \nAlmost Nothing is an exercise in artistic freedom\, the album shifts from electronica to moments of shimmering art pop – a genre fluid record – melodic\, poetic\, catchy and just confusing enough to escape full comprehension. \n————- \nTickets are on sale now locally from Slide Record Shop and Esquires\, or online at Seetickets.

SUMMARY:LONDON CALLING PLAY THE CLASH
DESCRIPTION:‘Give ‘Em Enough Rope’\n45th Anniversary Tour 1978-2023 \nLondon Calling play the 1978 album by The Clash in full to celebrate it’s 45th anniversary. \nThe Clash released their acclaimed second album Give ‘Em Enough Rope in 1978. It went to #2 in the UK Charts and was the first album by the band to be released in the USA. Sounds Magazine named the album as the ‘Best Album of the Year’. NME voted it the ’87th Greatest Album of All Time’ retrospectively in 1993. \nLondon Calling\, the world’s premiere tribute to The Clash\, will be paying homage by playing the album in it’s entirety in sequence. SUMMARY:Bingo Fury + The Grubby Mitts
DESCRIPTION:BINGO FURY\n7:30pm Friday 19th April\, Esquires Bedford\n\nThe Pad Presents team are very excited about this one\, an artist that’s on many tastemakers lists for 2024.\nBingo Fury conjures a glitzy – altogether seedy – Broadway sheen. Although very much a solo songwriter\, Bingo’s compositional process relies on contributions from his entire band – bassist Megan Jenkins\, and drummer Henry Terrett have been playing together since their teens. In one of their various incarnations\, they recruited local avant-jazz legend\, cornet player Harry ‘Iceman’ Furniss\, with guitarist and percussionist Rafi Cohen later completing the line-up.\n\nInfluenced by classic songwriters as much as pioneers of alternative experimentation\, the songs can often land like a jazz standard that got lost multiple times on its journey to the present day. Some pit stops are obvious: the haunting balladry of Nina Simone and Leonard Cohen\, and the arresting no-wave of James Chance and The Lounge Lizards.\n\nBingo Fury’s debut single ‘Big Rain’ released on Ra Ra Rok Records 14/07/21.\nTickets are on sale from Seetickets\, Slide Record Shop and Esquires Bar

SUMMARY:Wasted Youth + Venus Fly Trap
DESCRIPTION:WASTED YOUTH + Venus Fly Trap\n7;30pm Friday April 5th \n“Wasted Youth were arguably the greatest ‘lost’ London band of the post-punk years. Rarely mentioned\, if at all\, in the era’s music history books\, they were heavily influenced by the dark narcotic glamour of the Velvets\, the Doors and Transformer-era Lou Reed. The Only Ones Peter Perrett produced them\, as did Martin Hannett. They were hugely popular as the Eighties dawned with punks looking for something more sexy and sophisticated and looked set to become much more than the cult band they became. They pre-dated Positive Punk and Goth and are still remembered as quietly-influential and a superb live band by fans” – Louder Than War \nWasted Youth are an English post-punk band from London\, active between 1979 and 1982\, who blended post-punk/proto-Goth with dark acoustic strains of the sort associated with Nick Drake and Syd Barrett. The line-up of the band was Ken Scott (vocals and guitar)\, Rocco Barker (guitar)\, Nick Nicole (synth)\, Darren Murphy (bass) and Andy Scott (drums). \nIn October 2021\, Ken Scott and Rocco Barker announced that they were reviving Wasted Youth\, with new members Ray ‘Sonic’ Hanson (from Thee Hypnotics) on guitar\, Alan Temple (from The Low Gods) on drums\, Teresa Casella (Miranda Sex Garden) on bass and Josef Rosam on (from Dorothy Vallens) second bass\, synth and percussion\, who joined in March 2022.\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wySYUM-Kj38\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pXnZdy5U1Q\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ5yU0eQzig\nhttps://www.facebook.com/Wasted.Youth.1979 \nSupport from VENUS FLY TRAP\nElectro Post Punk from Northampton \nReview of Time Lapse 1989 – 1994 “This is the true avant-garde sound\, but it came about when the term no longer had the impact it had in the early eighties. Compilation that seeks the most emblematic moments of the three albums (“Totem”\, “Pandora’s Box” and “Luna Tide”) edited in the period indicated by the title. Post-punk\, gothic rock and a dose of experimentalism that make us have a set of songs that is both dated and emblematic of a genre that has a very specific spirit” -Fernando Ferreira\, WOM \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjjrBkaCALY\nhttps://www.facebook.com/thevenusflytrapuk \nTickets exclusive to Skiddle priced £15
