SUMMARY:Praying Mantis
DESCRIPTION:Praying Mantis + Guests \n7;30pm\, Friday 17th October \nPraying Mantis are one of the NWOBHM movement’s most loved bands. Forming way back in London in 1973\, Praying Mantis have since released 12 studio albums over the last 50 years\, including the most recent\, 2024’s Defiance\, an excellent celebration of their career. The band charted in 1981 with their beloved debut album\, ‘Time Tells No Lies’\, and have gone on to have an epic career.\n\nThe band have played support slots with metal gods Iron Maiden\, and even featured Maiden stalwarts at different times\, with both Clive Burr and the late great Paul Di’Anno joining the legendary Troy brothers for different eras. The latest rendition of the band has been stable since 2013\, with Dutch born John Cuijpers and Hans in’t Zandt featuring on the past 4 albums. alongside the legendary Troy Brothers.\n\nGypsy’s Kiss are famed for being the band at the “top of the Iron Maiden family tree”\, with this being the first band Steve Harris ever lent his capable songwriting skills to. They played a number of shows across the capital at the mythical Cart & Horses and The Bridge House in Canning Town\, before Steve went on to form Iron Maiden. Original guitarist and vocalist David Smith decided in 2018 to bring back Gypsy’s Kiss\, to play songs from those early days that Maiden fans across the globe had heard rumours of\, but have never been able to listen to. Since then\, with an experienced lineup behind him\, David and the band have gone on to record and perform all of the songs written back in the mid 70s\, including ‘Influence’\, the first song Steve Harris ever played live\, and brand new compositions celebrating the heritage of music from that period.\n\nTickets £15 exclusive to Seetickets\n

SUMMARY:Kris Barras Hollow Souls
DESCRIPTION:British virtuoso blues-rock guitarist\, former pro MMA fighter and hard rock frontman Kris Barras launches an exciting new musical collective that takes him back to his blues rock roots. Once the leading light of the young British blues-rock scene; he’s back with a new band; Hollow Souls. From humble beginnings in Torquay\, Devon\, to trading licks with the likes of Joe Bonamassa and Billy Gibbons on the world stage\, Kris has already lived a hundred lives that defy his youth and exuberance. Kris’ own project Kris Barras Band had a mammoth 2024. From selling out headline shows in British castles\, headlining Planet Rockstock\, and a Top #5 UK album with Halo Effect. Known for the gravelly vocal tone and immense guitar playing that gifted him a rapid ascent in the British blues-rock world\, it is no surprise that KBB’s music has evolved year-on-year. KBB hit it off with acclaimed US hard rock songwriters and signed to Earache Records which set off a creative chain reaction that led to a darker\, heavier\, and more energetic sound. Whilst KBB is firmly intrenched in the world of heavy music\, Kris is still a bluesman at heart. Whilst in-between albums with KBB\, this creative lightning strike with his latest project Hollow Souls just happened to hit with something different. \nInspired by the U.S. supergroup Supersonic Blues Machine in which he also performed and energised by the wealth of British talent around him\, to create Hollow Souls\, Kris put together a homegrown jam band to serve as a creative sparring exercise during his downtime

SUMMARY:Dodgy + Rosellas
DESCRIPTION:Legends of the UK live scene\, there’s not many festivals or indeed towns that these boys haven’t played in the 34 years they’ve been together. In that time\, they have released five albums\, sold over 2 million records\,been streamed over 50 million times worldwide\, and enjoyed 12 Top 40 singles\, including the massive hit Good Enough’ – officially one of the most played tracks on British radio in the last 30 years. \nThe recent Anniversary Tours of Dodgy’s classic albums\, Free Peace Sweet – a fan favourite and deemed a classic album of the era\, spawning hits such as ‘In A Room’\, ‘If You’re Thinking Of Me’\, ‘Found You’ and of course\, ‘Good Enough’\, and the hugely successful shows for Homegrown – ‘Staying Out For The Summer’\, ‘So Let Me Go Far’\, ‘Melodies Haunt You’ and the modern classic\, ‘Grassman’- that culminated in unforgettable nights at Shepherds Bush Empire and The Forum\, have seen the busiest years for the band since the crazy days of the mid 90’s. \nDodgy are a rare entity nowadays as the band still boast the original line up of Nigel Clark\, Mathew Priest and Andy Miller\, which is a miracle considering the scrapes and conditions they have been in over their career but they are better and more energized than ever\, which is partly down to some clever signings over the years to add depth and beauty to their squad\, with Stu Thoy on bass and multi-instrumentalist\, Graham Mann. And it’s this line up that is currently in the studio in Wales working on the highly anticipated follow up to the critically acclaimed album What Are We Fighting For\, that will be released at the start of 2026. \nDodgy actually released their Ian Broudie produced debut album in 1993 before the whole Britpop phenomenon kicked off but by having a broader appeal and being blessed with being nimble and possessing great balance\, the boys managed to surf that wave with alarming aplomb. Since then they have toured and played with everyone from The Who\, Oasis\, Blur and even The Jacksons. \nDodgy’s legacy as one of the standout British bands of the 1990s remains intact and have become a\ncherished part of British musical history. \nTickets online from seetickets.com and physicals from Slide and Esquires.

SUMMARY:Dog Race + Flip Top Head + Luggs
DESCRIPTION:Dog Race are a quintet originally hailing from Bedford and have been building quite the reputation for their gothic tinged electronically enhanced sound. It’s the Squeeze\, The Leader and recent release Return the Day (Colours) are all full of horror movie chill\, vibrancy and skyscraping choruses. \nThe journey from their Bedfordshire origins to the capital’s pulsing heart wasn’t just geographical; it was transformative. As Katie explains\, “Honestly\, the car journeys home after rehearsing in London broke us\, so we all officially live in London now\, which is where the rest of the Dogs were based.” This convergence in the capital has allowed the band – completed by Katie’s brother Jed on drums\, Will Macnab on bass\, and Dillon handling synth and keys – to forge something more cohesive\, more intentional. \nThose unassuming beginnings seem like ancient history now. The band have evolved into something far more formidable\, their sound a dark amalgamation of influences that spans decades and continents. Their musical DNA draws deeply from the wellspring of German experimental music\, with Katie noting their inspiration from pioneering artists: “We’ve taken a lot of inspiration from German artists such as Kraftwerk\, Klaus Nomi and Xmal Deutschland. I’m naturally drawn to that kind of music because of how leftfield and dark it was\, yet it still feels ahead of its time\, even decades later. There’s a real sense of resistance and urgency in their work\, of course\, shaped by the history they were living through. That context adds so much weight and meaning to the sound\, which is something I find really impactful and inspiring.” \nTickets on sale NOW through seetickets.com\, Slide and Esquires.

SUMMARY:Miki Berenyi Trio + Swallowtail - Matinee Show
DESCRIPTION:Miki Berenyi Trio are Miki Berenyi on vocals/guitar (Lush)\, Kevin ‘Moose’ McKillop on guitar (Moose) and Oliver Cherer (Gilroy Mere\, Aircooled). The three musicians first worked together during Piroshka’s 2021 tour – Miki and Kevin being founder members\, Oliver coming in on bass to replace Mick Conroy (Modern English) who had moved to the US. \nWhen the global pandemic made touring impossible\, Miki spent the lockdown months writing her memoir\, Fingers Crossed\, released in 2022 to widespread acclaim. To provide some musical accompaniment for the string of book events and signings\, Miki Berenyi Trio was formed. \nThe band has developed a momentum of its own\, touring with the Wedding Present and Gang of Four and sold out London co-headline show with Aircooled. An album ‘Tripla’ was released in April garnering stellar reviews – “Rooted in shoegaze and dream pop\, her new LP is tinged with sadness—but fueled by joy of playing again.” – Pitchfork \n“Dream-pop at its finest… a quilt of sophisticated future shoegaze… MB3 have laid down the gauntlet with this debut.” Louder Than War – 9/10 (Album of the Week) \n“The beatbox and spacious synth/guitar textures lend Tripla greater sophistication than any regurgitated ‘shoegaze’\, instead evoking mid-80s New Order’s retro-futurist pop\, where elegant tunes and crisp tempos provide a stately platform for Berenyi’s forthright messaging… On all fronts\, a nourishing listen.” MOJO – 4 stars **** \n“Fiercely political but sonically spacious and crisply melodic\, Tripla is consistently thrilling.” The Guardian \nMiki (and band) return to Esquires after the sold out book+interview show at Esquires in May 2023. Tickets on sale now priced £14 from the usual outlets + seetickets.com \nIn association with Arts Council England\, a limited number of tickets are available for just £5 for those on a low income or struggling with increases in the costs of living. \n

SUMMARY:The BellRays + Dois Padres
DESCRIPTION:The BellRays \nEsquires\, Bedford – Saturday 4th October \nBlues is the teacher. Punk is the Preacher. It’s all about emotion and energy. Experience and raw talent\, spirit and intellect. Exciting things happen when these things collide. \nBob Vennum and Lisa Kekaula made The BellRays happen in 1990 in Riverside\, California but they weren’t really thinking about any of this then. They wanted to play music and they wanted it to feel good. They wanted people to WANT to get up\, to NEED to get up and check out what was going on. Form an opinion. React. \nSo they took everything they knew about; the Beatles\, Stevie Wonder\, the Who\, the Ramones Billie Holiday\, Lou Rawls\, Hank Williams\, the DB’s\, Jimmy Reed\, and Led Zeppelin (to name a very few to whom “BLUES IS THE TEACHER”) and pressed it into service. \nThose bands and artists have since become “buzz words”\, things to imitate and sound like. That was never The BellRays intention. The BellRays were never about coming up with a “sound”\, or fitting in with a scene. It was about the energy that made all that music so irresistible. The BellRays’ influences learned from the Blues and then learned how to to make it their own. The Beatles wanted to play R&B\, converted that energy and invented “Rubber Soul”. The Ramones were trying to be Del Shannon or Neil Sedaka and out came “Rocket to Russia”. \nIt’s an organic trail that flows through Bob and Lisa and the current rhythm section  of Pablo Rodas (Lisa and the Lips\, Alber Solo) on bass and Craig Waters (Countdowns\, Andre Williams\, Cody Chestnut) on drums\, and comes out honest and urgent. You will learn and you will feel. Blues is always teaching and Punk is always preaching. \nTickets from seetickets.com / Slide / Esquires
