SUMMARY:Roadhouse play the Sunday Afternoon Session at Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:Roadhouse was formed in 1991 by Gary Boner\, ably assisted throughout by the driving bass of Bill Hobley and the powerful drumming of Roger Hunt. Seizing on an eclectic mix of influences from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Creedence Clearwater Revival\, the band has developed a sound all of its own. In the words of a recent Blues Matters review: “They veer towards the rocky side of the Blues\, but are clearly Blues based and play in a punchy style with musicianship and original songs of the highest quality”. Roadhouse is a merger of experienced Blues/Rock musicians and 3 dynamic\, young female vocalists \nRoadhouse play a South London twist on gothic Americana\, the songs paint cinematic soundscapes and feature themes of desperation\, film noir\, loss of hope and redemption

SUMMARY:The Night Cafe / Safe To Swim / The Relights at Esquires Bedford
DESCRIPTION:The Night Café\nExciting new Liverpool teens The Night Café have come back swinging with a pop-tinged summer anthem called ‘Mixed Signals’. The story of a misguided kid that goes off the rails\, ‘Mixed Signals’ is a journey through the heartbreak of a shattered relationship punctuated by the band’s signature intricately spun guitar riffs and sweet vocal melodies.\nThe track will feature on a new AA-side release coming this October.\nFollowing their buoyant performance on the BBC Introducing Stage at T in the Park this summer\, the band have also announced a huge UK tour which features headline dates in December\, as well as support runs with Reading darlings Sundara Karma and The Hunna in September and October. \nThe band first shot to prominence last year when their debut song\, ‘Growing Up’\, appeared on SoundCloud\, and soon racked up over 410\,000 spins. Formed of Sean Martin\, Josh Higgins\, Arran O’Connell and Carl Dillon\, The Night Café are making an even bigger impression on 2016. \n“bathed in sunshine… poppier than a fizzed-up Fanta” DIY \nHaving grown up in the same area of Liverpool and separately developed a love for playing music while at secondary school\, it took a while for Sean\, Josh\, Arran and Carl to be introduced through mutual friends\, but they soon struck upon a natural songwriting chemistry. \nInitially plying their trade as drummers\, Sean and Josh began to play guitar and twisted Arran’s arm into swapping his guitar for the bass\, with Carl picking up the sticks later. Strongly attached to their hometown\, but eschewing the traditional musical heritage of The Beatles and The Coral\, the four friends began to rehearse together\, finding that their camaraderie was more than enough to fuel a deluge of joyous indie tracks – combining Sean’s charming lyricism and glowing vocal melodies with bold guitar hooks\, snaking bass riffs and rich\, metronomic drumming. Settling upon the name\, The Night Café\, the quartet made the short trip upstairs to Whitewood recording studio – their practice space is in the basement of the Victorian building\, known as Elevator Studios\, home to The Wombats\, Dan Croll\, Circa Waves\, Echo and the Bunnymen\, and Clinic – where producer Robert Whiteley helped to polish their promising demos into the sparkling\, soaring 2015 releases ‘Growing Up’ and ‘Addicted’. \nReturning at the start of this year with two more shimmering chunks of lively guitar music in ‘Together’ and ‘Time’\, the band crystallise exactly how it feels to throw off the shackles of school life and be catapulted into a world of new experiences at eighteen-years old\, all tied together with an infectious rhythm and melodic crispness more akin to Fleetwood Mac than any of Liverpool’s past icons. \nSAFE TO SWIM \nThe Relights \n♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆♫☆♪☆ \nTICKETS: £7 Adv / £9 Door – ON-SALE Weds 23 August 9am \nAVAILABLE FROM THE FOLLOWING OUTLETS: \nAdvance Tickets – \nhttp://www.juiceboxindie.com \nAges 14+ (Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian) \nTickets may be available on the door but we strongly advise you purchase them in advance to avoid disappointment \nSo you know what to do now\, click on JOIN\, then invite your friends and spread the word!

SUMMARY:Lioness: The Amy Winehouse Experience - Saturday 7th October
DESCRIPTION:In her short career the talent of Amy Winehouse created a lasting impression on the music world of the 21st century. Recording three critically acclaimed albums from her debut ‘Frank’ in 2003\, the Grammy Award winning ‘Back to Black’ in 2006 and the posthumous ‘Lioness’ in 2011 along with the covers of ‘Cupid’ and ‘Valerie’ with Producer Mark Ronson no one can deny the talent and impact of this often misunderstood star. \nLioness provide an authentic tribute to the precocious talent featuring TV’s ‘Stars in The Eyes’ finalist Emma Wright as Amy Winehouse plus a full five piece backing band to recreate the authentic sound of this heady mix of jazz\, soul and pop. SUMMARY:The Subways + Atlas Wynd / Friday 6th October / Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents are teaming up with our good friends over at Juicebox Live to bring you a very intimate warm up show from The Subways! \nThe Subways \nTHE SUBWAYS are truly one of the most exciting live bands on the current touring circuit\, thrilling crowds with their high-octane\, explosive rock sound and wild stage performances. Firm European summer festival favorites\, they have graced the main stages of over 100 international festivals across 20 countries. Through stage diving\, circle pits and crowd surfing\, the band are known to lead their fans in orchestrated mayhem as they crash through their thoroughly entertaining set. \nBack in 2005\, with an average age of just 17\, Billy\, Charlotte and Josh crashed onto the international music scene with their\, now cult\, debut\, gold selling album ‘Young For Eternity’ and rock-club floor filler ‘Rock & Roll Queen’. (Watch a live video with 75\,000+ people HERE). The NME proclaimed them “The sexiest thing to sweep rock n roll off it’s feet in years!”. Their sophomore album\, ‘All Or Nothing’ (2008)\, was recorded in LA with Nirvana/ Smashing Pumpkins producer Butch Vig and is “Buoyed with emotional heft and supernova guitar riffs\, wired around a maturing song craft” (MOJO). The tracks written around the time Billy was battling to save his voice by undergoing surgery to remove polyps from his vocal chords. The ‘Money And Celebrity’ album followed in 2011 with the band working with Blur/Smiths producer Stephen Street on this insanely catchy pop-rock record full of “brilliantly anarchic punk-pop vignettes; each being a big musical finger that sticks it to financial greed\, the mediocre mainstream and the fame fetishists” (ROCKSOUND)… such as lead single ‘We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time’. (Watch the single video HERE) \nBilly Lunn\, the band’s lead singer and guitarist notes the new self- titled 4th album is “100% The Subways\, it’s all us\, we wrote\, produced\, and mixed the album ourselves.“ The record has been described as “Near-perfect\, punk-spirited noise” (KERRANG!) and “On Par with the best things they have ever written… and finds the band energized\, focused and battle-ready” (Q MAGAZINE). \n———— \nSupport from \nAtlas Wynd \nTickets are £12 adv\, on sale 10am Monday 21st August:\nSeetickets: http://www.seetickets.com/event/the-subways/bedford-esquires/1137584\nTicketweb: https://www.ticketweb.uk/event/the-subways-esquires-tickets/7645295?pl=juicebox \nTickets will be available in local outlets from Wednesday 23rd August \nTHIS IS A 14+ AGES SHOW – Under 16s to be accompanied by an adult \n————- \nhttp://www.thepadpresents.com\nhttp://www.juiceboxindie.com

SUMMARY:Tonight* The Icicle Works - Bedford Esquires Thurs 5th October
DESCRIPTION:The Icicle Works \n2.5 hour show performing the music of Ian McNabb & The Icicle Works \n(Please note 8pm start / no support) \n7.30pm\, Thursday 5th October Bedford Esquires \nAfter receiving rave reviews throughout their recent spring tour The Icicle Works will embark on a UK tour in Autumn 2017\, performing a 2.5 hour show of the music of Ian McNabb and The Icicle Works. \nThe Icicle Works were one of those U.K. groups of the ’80s that scored one fluke hit in the U.S. despite a somewhat lengthy and more successful run in their homeland. They released a number of albums that\, while regularly inconsistent\, featured scattered moments that helped define the type of big-sounding guitar rock — prone to chest-beating bombast — that set them apart from fellow Liverpool-based groups like Echo & the Bunnymen\, the Teardrop Explodes\, and (somewhat less so) Wah! The group formed in 1980. Singer/guitarist/keyboardist Ian McNabb had played in a number of other groups from a young age\, including Young World\, which performed at private events and also featured drummer Chris Sharrock. \nMcNabb and Sharrock went on to play with different acts — the former in City Lights\, the latter in the Cherry Boys — but they eventually decided to form a group of their own\, with the addition of former Eleanor bassist Chris Layhe. Although they released a low-key six-song cassette that was sold at Liverpool’s Probe Records\, they didn’t make their official debut until October 1982\, when the “Nirvana” single was issued on Troll Kitchen. It went up to number 15 on the U.K. chart\, prompting Beggars Banquet subsidiary Situation 2 to rope in the group. \nThe Small Price of a Bicycle The Hugh Jones-produced “Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)” would provide The Icicle Works with their greatest commercial standing in the U.S. Released in 1984 via Beggars Banquet’s stateside arrangement with Arista\, the powers that were in the U.S. had the title of the song switched around to “Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly).” The song remained on the Hot 100 chart for four weeks and peaked at number 37. \nThe song didn’t fare quite as well in the U.K.; it stalled at number 53. Nonetheless\, the popularity of the song in the U.S. helped catapult the group’s self-titled debut album to number 40 on the album chart. A prolific succession of albums — 1985′s The Small Price of a Bicycle\, 1986′s Understanding Jane and Seven Singles Deep\, 1987′s If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song\, 1988′s Blind — helped maintain a cult of numerous followers\, many of whom were on board for McNabb’s impassioned song writing. Each album featured its own share of throwaway material and\, by the time of Blind\, the group was dabbling in an over-ambitious lost-map mixture of soul\, funk\, blooze\, and rock. Permanent Damage After the recording of Blind\, Sharrock left the group to join the Lightning Seeds; Layhe exited as well\, but McNabb continued with bassist Roy Corkhill and drummer Zak Starkey\, Ringo Starr’s son. Even after this\, a number of personnel changes occurred. By the time 1990′s Permanent Damage was recorded\, McNabb was supported by Corkhill\, Dave Baldwin\, Paul Burgess\, and Mark Revell. Despite McNabb’s resilience\, the album went nowhere and the group was eventually laid to rest. The leader began a solo career that followed the folk-rock leanings that played an increasing role throughout his band’s lifespan. A reformed Icicle Works have been performing occasional live dates since 2006 and this is a rare chance to see them on your doorstep. \nTickets go on sale Friday 3rd February at 9am online from Seetickets and can be picked up in person from Bedford Esquires Bar\, Slide Record Shop and Mario’s Hair Design.

SUMMARY:The Scruff / Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles / Sarpa Salpa
DESCRIPTION:THE PAD PRESENTS\nhttp://www.thepadpresents.com \nThe Scruff – Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles – Sarpa Salpa \nWe are very pleased to announce that we will be putting on the headline home town show for one of the areas finest bands\, The Scruff. \nWe have some very special guests for this show\, with former Catfish & The Bottlemen guitarist Billy Bibby coming along his new band The Wry Smiles as main support\, and a great new band causing a stir of their own\, Sarpa Salpa opening up the show! \nThe Scruff are a band back in the saddle after a somewhat turbulent year that has seen some major changes\, both in life and as a band. The Bedford natives have seen a member emigrate\, a rebuilding process and a new outlook on their sound fuelled by the passing of a beautiful soul that inspired their latest single ‘Her’. \nThe single is the bands most personal work to date\, not only an ode to those who never had the time to say goodbye\, but also to all the important women who help nurture and shape our lives. While previous release ‘Leave it Alone’ captured the boisterous guitar-fronted alt-pop that their live shows deliver\, bandmates Adam\, Jack\, Omar and Sam\, have taken on a far more ambitious project with this next single\, an anthemic\, uplifting\, stadium rousing track that will resonate with anyone who loves and has lost. \nSince the band drafted in new lead guitarist Jack\, The Scruff have been writing and crafting their sound and their skills\, with a brand new set\, and a whole heap of new tracks recorded\, ready to unleash on an unsuspecting public. \nThis will be the bands only Bedford show for the forseeable future\, come and see what they’ve been cooking! \n——————– \nTickets are £6 advance\, on sale now from Seetickets.com here:\nhttp://www.seetickets.com/event/the-scruff-billy-bibby-tws-sarpa-salpa/bedford-esquires/1149008 \nTickets are available from Friday 15th September from:\nThe Scruff band members\nSarpa Salpa band members\nBoutique Planet\, The Arcade\, Bedford\nMarios Hair Design\, Kempston\nEsquires Bar \nFree aftershow party to be announced!

SUMMARY:Tonight* The Selecter & The Beat ft Ranking Roger\, Sat 30th Sept
DESCRIPTION:The Selecter & The Beat feat Ranking Roger – Co Headline tour \n7.30pm\, Saturday 30th September\, Bedford Corn Exchange \n2 Tone legends The Selecter and The Beat are teaming up to give fans a rare treat\, hitting the road together for a number of dates around the UK\, Ireland\, Holland and Belgium in 2017. Originally a six-date tour\, due to demand they added 8 more dates and now another 22 dates have been added in September\, October and November including another London show at the iconic Roundhouse in Camden on Friday 6 October 2017 after their show in April at Shepherd’s Bush Empire sold out in record time. \nLife-long friends\, they are two of the main bands to come out of 2 Tone – a crucial musical and cultural movement which is still as relevant today as it was over 30 years ago. Renowned for their energetic live shows\, longevity has not diminished either band’s ability to put in a performance and get everyone in a room\, or field\, dancing. Don’t miss arguably two of the best live bands around playing full sets of their many hits\, and more each night. \nThe Selecter is led by their iconic frontwoman Pauline Black\, alongside an incredible talented band of musicians\, and co-fronted by original member Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson. The anarchic passion that fuelled Selecter gigs during the 2 Tone era is still there\, except the pair (Pauline & Gaps) are more driven than ever. Their confidence is sky-high and they’re also writing the best songs of their career\, which is saying something given the enduring popularity of hits like Three Minute Hero\, Missing Words and On My Radio. Their latest album\, Subculture\, was mixed by UK dub-master Prince Fatty and released to critical acclaim in June 2015. \nThe Beat fronted by Ranking Roger released their spectacular fourth album Bounce (the first in over 30 years) in September 2016. The album shows off every gleaming aspect of one of the most musically diverse bands to come out of the multiracial\, multicultural explosion that remade British pop from 1979 onwards. Joining Roger in the revitalised band is his son Ranking Junior AKA Matthew Murphy a powerhouse MC who brings to the band an update on the toasting that made Ranking Roger such a pivotal part of the original Beat. The same energy that drove the hit singles of the 80s; Mirror In The Bathroom\, Stand Down Margaret and Too Nice To Talk To – is here again on the new album. \nNo strangers to Bedford Corn Exchange\, this will be The Selecter’s 3rd visit to the venue packing it out in their own right in Feb 16. The Beat feat Ranking Roger are no strangers to Bedford either headlining the River Festival in the past as well as a sell out headline show at the Corn Exchange in 2011 with Neville Staple\, as well as packing out regular club shows at Bedford Esquires. The two bands touring together takes these shows to another level which has seen all the shows selling out up and down the UK. \n—————————— \nTickets are on sale from Friday 3rd March at 10am online from Seetickets and the Corn Exchange Box Office / Website (subject to booking fee). Tickets can also be picked up in person (booking fee free) from Planet Boutique in the Arcade\, Mario’s Hair Design in Kempston and Vinyl Revelations in Luton \nTHE SELECTER & THE BEAT\nCO-HEADLINE TOUR 2017 \n31 Mar GLASGOW O2 ABC – SOLD OUT\n01 Apr MANCHESTER Old Granada Studios – SOLD OUT\n07 Apr NOTTINGHAM Rock City\n08 Apr BRISTOL O2 Academy – SOLD OUT\n14 Apr CARDIFF Tramshed – SOLD OUT\n15 Apr BEXHILL De La Warr Pavilion\n28 Apr BIRMINGHAM o2 Institute – SOLD OUT\n29 Apr LONDON o2 Shepherds Bush Empire – SOLD OUT\n05 May DUBLIN The Academy – SOLD OUT\n30 Sep BEDFORD Corn Exchange \nhttp://www.theselecter.net\nhttp://www.thebeatofficial.com

SUMMARY:Sharks
DESCRIPTION:The group was originally formed by Andy Fraser from the band Free\, no longer with us and sadly departed in 2015\, but the rest of the band plan to make a go of it\, for the sheer audacious hell of it and to see where it takes them. Just because they are in the tea time of their life rather than the beginning\, it doesn’t mean there isn’t unfinished business. \nChris Spedding (guitarist extraordinaire\, who worked with Roxy Music\, The Sex Pistols\, The Wombles and recorded with Sixto Rodriguez\, but did not realise it until the ‘Searching for Sugarman’ documentary came out)\, \nSteve (‘Snips’) Parsons (who went on to forge an amazing career in film\, commercials and TV music\, turning his back on rock stardom\, choosing to live in the musical shadows) and Nicky Judd (keyboards for many a seventies band and afterwards). Also on board are Sex Pistol/ Professionals drummer Paul Cook and bassist Toshi Ogawa from Kingmob and Hey! Hello! on bass. \n The idea for reforming Sharks first came about two years ago\, when Snips co-produced Spedding’s all-star solo album Joyland\, which featured Johnny Marr\, Bryan Ferry and Andy Fraser\, amongst others.

DESCRIPTION:THE PAD PRESENTS\nhttp://www.thepadpresents.com \nBO NINGEN + Reptunes (formerly LUPO) – Friday 22nd September – Bedford Esquires \nFriday 22nd September will see a truly amazing band who played one of the greatest shows here in recent memory\, Bo Ningen are return to Bedford Esquires for a special festival warm up show! \nFrom the heart of Tokyo to a village in the mountains\, Bo Ningen are four skinny Japanese guys based in London calling themselves ‘enlightenment activists from far east psychedelic underground’. Their first gig was in 2008. \nSince then they have played the UK\, France\, Germany\, Spain\, Portugal\, Romania\, Italy\, Austria\, Finland and Japan. Their shows have also been part of art and fashion events including the Frieze Art Fair\, Venice Biennale\, The Dazed TV special filmed by Rankin and the V&A. They were also specially commissioned by The Brancharge Festival to perform with the animation Cat Soup in London and Jersey and the band have recently collaborated with the band of the moment\, Savages. \nAs if beamed down from 1970\, Bo Ningen’s free spirit and incendiary live psych-outs remind you what watching a rock’n’roll band should be about. \n‘Bo Ningen sound like their absolute lives depend on their crowd having the best possible time – and having seen them in the flesh (and hair\, all over the place)\, it’s an emphatic yes from the other side of the barrier’ – BBC \nBo Ningen say ‘Being psychedelic means to stand quietly / loudly in the middle of interzone and stare at both sides at once’. \nWitness the spectacular. \nSupport comes from REPTUNES\, formerly our most favourite of favourite ‘local’ bands LUPO\, so it’s going to be more than good\, make sure you don’t miss them – http://www.reptunesband.com \n————————— \nTickets are £10 adv\, available here now:\nhttp://www.seetickets.com/event/bo-ningen/bedford-esquires/1135465 \nTickets available locally very soon.
