SUMMARY:Estrons + Guests. Independent Venue Week.
DESCRIPTION:**Independent Venue Week 2019 show** \nClub Bicuit\, The ROAR Club and The Pad Presents are very pleased to have teamed up for a special show with Estrons for Independent Venue Week 2019 on Saturday 2nd February 2018. IVW is a week long celebration of grassroots music venues\, that takes place across the UK and we have a tasty line up throughout the week\, culminating in this Estrons show. \nOn very rare occasions\, from the most destructive of places\, beauty can emerge. Ever since singer Tali Källström and guitarist Rhodri Daniel met as “two strangers with disparate tastes and influences\,” the two have been carving out a body of work that resembles an essence of chaos and beauty; a feeling of estrangement\, an expression of morbid elegance\, inspired by opposing sides. The funny thing about opposites\, is they need each other in order to exist – one wouldn’t be what it is without the other. \nFrom this place of tension\, Estrons found their debut album. Ultimately\, the bind that ties them is their love of creating fresh\, exhilarating music\, and with You Say I’m Too Much\, I Say You’re Not Enough\, they’ve done just that.Beginning as an experiment\, Estrons quickly became significantly more important than intended. They are simply aforce that cannot be forced. \nWith its off-kilter rhythms\, angular guitar work and clashing atmospherics\, the album is both arresting and thrillingly disorienting – a fitting sound for a band of “highly driven\, frustrated\, volatile people.”# \nVocals and instrumentals collide together throughout\, creating a wild\, beautiful noise – likely mirroring the self-confessed love/hate relationship between Rhodri and Tali\, tied together by bassist\, and long running producer\,Steffan Pringle\, whom they eventually convinced to join them. Despite the odds\, they have captured a sound of their own. Estrons’ music “can be off-putting at first glance\,” says Rhodri. “It’s only when you make your way through it that you get it. I have no time for music that doesn’t leave some sort of a mark.” And nor\, evidently\, does he make it. \n———————— \nFull support line up to be announced \nTickets are £10 advance\, on sale now from Seetickets here:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/estrons/bedford-esquires/1281166 \nAlso available from Esquires\, Slide Record Shop and Mario’s Hair Design \nThis is a 14+ ages show – Under 16s to be accompanied by an adult

Refunds available from the point of purchase. \nThe Pad Presents\nwww.thepadpresents.com \nThe Vryll Society + Guests – Tuesday 29th January – Bedford Esquires \nWe kick off Independent Venue Week 2019 is style with The Vryll Society! IVW is a week long celebration of grassroots music venues across the UK\, and we’re very pleased to be bringing one of our favourite guitar bands to the party. \n“Shimmery psych guitar\, spacey grooves and indie falsetto vocals. Ones to watch. ” Mojo Magazine. \n‘A fast rising band of astral voyagers’ Clashmusic.com \n‘This band will soon be up there with their Manchester mates Blossoms” Dave Monks\, BBC Introducing \nOne thing The Vryll Society aren’t short of is admirers\, Lauded at just about every turn by press and public alike\, the release of their debut LP for Deltasonic Records has brought great critical acclaim loads more fans and has led to sold out shows on their recent UK tour. \nDiscovered and nurtured by the late and much missed Deltasonic founder Alan Wills\, they fitted the type for him perfectly. He instantly saw in them similar attributes he’d previously found in the early days of The Coral. The confident swagger\, the solid union formed by their band-of-brothers gang mentality\, their willingness to stand outside the conventional and often stifling jangly Liverpool scene\, and the work ethic. Always the work ethic. \n“Alan taught us that all you need to conquer the world is a rehearsal room\, your instruments\, a good work ethic and a positive attitude and you’ll get there. He kind of taught us the rules and the attributes that you need to have to be successful so we’ve just continued on that path” says frontman Mike Ellis. \nThat unit have spent the intervening time creating and honing their own brand new-psych sound\, and building up a fanbase with their superlative live shows. Live \, The Vryll Society are a formidable force as seen on their recent UK tour with sold out shows across the UK they have begun to see a groundswell of fans growing fast. Crowds singing their songs along with them is what they have been working towards and is making their unique live shows unforgettable. \nDrawing from an eclectic palette of influence from deep funk to Krautrock\, electronica and prog\, they’ve created a heady\, intoxicating\, pin sharp\, and tightly wound groove\, It is at once blissful\, dizzying and madly infectious. It’s that eclecticism\, that kaleidoscopic swirl of influences which brings together hip hop flavours\, with the prog stylings of names such as Aphrodite’s Child and The Verve – pre Urban Hymns – when the drugs were still working. \nTheir gang mentality binds them together over the ideas formed by spending long hours together in the rehearsal every day. Hotwiring these ideas into the heads of the crowd through extended psych jams and deep solid grooves gives a different show every time\, and with each and every set\, the offer gets better. \nThe songs that fill the delicious grooves of debut album “Course Of The Satellite” weren’t so much written as devised or developed\, brought together organically over months in the band’s underground lair\, or over weeks in Liverpool’s Parr Street Studios. Working closely with producers\, Wills’ right hand man and Deltasonic brother-in-arms Joe Fearon and Tom Longworth. The result is a work of impressive confidence and stature. \nThe world is ready\, willing and more than able to take The Vryll Society even deeper to their heart. The path Alan Wills showed them awaits. It’s a path that leads to greatness. \n————————– \nTickets are £10 adv\, on sale 10am\, Friday 26th October:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/the-vryll-society/bedford-esquires/1281146 \nTickets are also available from Esquires\, Slide Record Shop and Mario’s Hair Design. \nDoors open 7.30pm – This is a 14+ ages show\, under 16s to be accompanied by an adult. \nFull support line up TBA.

SUMMARY:Gene Loves Jezebel with Jay Aston + Department S & Unquiet Dead
DESCRIPTION:This January will see the first UK tour by Gene Loves Jezebel in 10 years. Last year\, the band released Dance Underwater\, their first studio album of new material in 14 years via Plastichead. \nFor a band to stay relevant across decades is unusual — but to do so with much of the same line-up for most of that time is exceptional. Such is the case with Gene Loves Jezebel\, which indicates that these musicians come together not only out of an appreciation for the memorable music they create\, but also because they truly like and respect each other. Jay Aston (vocals)\, James Stevenson (guitars)\, Pete Rizzo (bass) and Chris Bell (drums) — with Peter Walsh producing — have created extraordinary GLJ songs for 30 years now. With their new album\, they honour that legacy by expanding it. \nWhen the group announced a crowdfunding drive for their first album of new material in 14 years\, fan response was swift and overwhelming\, with donations far exceeding the initial goal. It is impressive\, given the length of time since the last GLJ release from these gentlemen\, that this outfit still generates this much interest. The band rewarded fans’ loyalty and trust with an intimate look inside the writing and recording process\, with members posting frequent social media updates from the studio. Fans loved hearing about the joy and intensity that generate GLJ songs\, and in turn\, their outpouring of enthusiasm seemed to spur the group to greater levels of creativity. This give-and-take revealed the depth of mutual respect and gratitude between the band and its fans. \nIt is unsurprising that this edition of GLJ has proven as relevant and creatively vibrant as ever. These are the same members that helped the band achieve many of its biggest successes. This is not to say that any previous incarnations were unsuccessful but with this particular line-up\, the GLJ sound crystallized into its most recognizable and enduring form. \nGLJ members have always been far more interested in moving forward artistically\, rather than dwelling on past achievements\, but this reunion seems an appropriate occasion to acknowledge how each has made an integral imprint on the signature GLJ sound. Without any of them\, GLJ might not have evolved into a such special entity with passionate fans worldwide. \nJay Aston founded GLJ in London in 1981 and quickly gained a fervent following. Promise\, the band’s trailblazing debut\, appeared in 1983. Though he shared vocals with his brother Michael\, Jay was the primary songwriter. Jay’s songs\, spotlighting his uninhibited and highly distinctive singing style\, made GLJ instantly memorable and identifiable. Immigrant followed in 1985\, marking Pete Rizzo’s first recordings with the band; his inventive and complex bass lines instantly became an essential part of the GLJ sound. The band matured even further on Discover (1986)\, when James Stevenson joined and demonstrated his talent for delivering guitar work that is both melodic and powerful. (Discover was also the first GLJ album that Peter Walsh was involved in\, starting a symbiotic relationship that continues with their new album.) Then\, on The House of Dolls (1987)\, Chris Bell joined the band full-time\, his drumming providing a flawless foundation. Michael was largely absent from recording that album\, resulting in the four-piece incarnation of Jay\, Pete\, James and Chris that is still going strong to this day. \nIt is noteworthy that while GLJ grew increasingly successful with each release\, The House of Dolls led to a big jump in their U.K. and U.S. popular chart success\, as well as substantial MTV exposure\, a trend that continued when this same lineup released Kiss of Life (1990) and the single “Jealous” reached the top spot on the U.S. alternative rock chart. The band had clearly hit its stride\, and the artistic achievements continued unabated with the following studio albums: Heavenly Bodies in 1992 (which the band itself considers its finest studio recording — until this new album\, that is!)\, VII in 1999\, and The Thornfield Sessions in 2003. \nThere is a particular ineffable magic in these musicians reuniting as GLJ. Their experience and knowledge add a layer of depth to the music they create together. They refuse to relegate their band to some nostalgia/novelty circuit; you will never find them merely creating a House of Dolls 2.0. Instead\, their new release is intense and energetic\, reflecting the euphoria found in rekindling a fulfilling long-time dynamic partnership. \nJay Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel had embarked on its next decade of musical excellence. The new album is truly a gift to all their fans who in turn gave a great gift to the band by making its production possible!

SUMMARY:The Ouse Valley Singles Club's traditional First Gig of the year
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 5th January – The Ouse Valley Singles Club – Live at Esquires \nWe are performing in Holy Moly’s so limited numbers… Tickets available from the Esquires Bar\, Slide Record Store & Mario’s Hair Design as well as online from Seetickets on the event page link \nThe Ouse Valley Singles Club are no strangers to the Bedford Music Scene\, Local boys (and Gal) started performing around 2009 as a 2 piece Skiffle band and steadily evolved into a 5 piece that most local music lovers know and love today. \nHowever\, if you are not familiar with The OVSC and you are wondering what or Who they are well\, heres a bit of spiel about them: \nThe OVSC are a 5 piece band from the rather cosmopolitan market town of Bedford that use sounds & traditions of 1950’s Skiffle combined with the energy of Punk and a splash of Rub n dub Reggae to relay hilarious Folk-like story-telling within their rather infectious songs\, often crossing the parameters of what is deemed to be socially acceptable. In doing this\, they have created a truly original & highly entertaining genre that has been dubbed (by them) as “New Wave Skiffle”. Their songs and videos\, (including Girl From the Fens\, Milf Hunter\, Spunky Dave\, River Great Ouse and the east nothants anthem ‘from Rushden with Love’) have given them a pretty strong online presence and gained a massive following of lovely loyal fans and a semi.. a semi-cult status in and around the East Anglian / east midlands region. \nTheir first show of the year at Esquires has now become a bit of a tradition on the Bedford Music scene. It started around 4 years ago when as a 3 piece of Tim (Luke and vocals)\, Amy (Bass and Vocals and Uncle Sam (Washboard and Raggamuffin MC/Toasting) were asked if they fancied doing a last minute impromptu gig in The Bar at Esquires as it was usually empty the first weekend of the New Year after Xmas and they packed it out… This has now become a regular event in the Bedford Music scene\, and moved upstairs to the Main Stage due to the demand in tickets (selling out every time). \nThis year they are keeping it cozy and limiting the number of tickets available by playing in the downstairs area of Holy Moly’s this is going to be a rather special night and one not to be missed!

SUMMARY:Sarpa Salpa + The Keepers + Basement Strippers + Gaylips
DESCRIPTION:SARPA SALPA\n+ The Keepers + Basement Strippers + Gaylips\n7.30pm\, Saturday 29th December\, Main Stage\, Esquires\, Bedford \nIn the final Pad Presents show of the year we have lined up a big Saturday night bill to see out Christmas with 4 bands and a late club night to close proceedings. \nHeadliners for the night are no strangers to the venue as SARPA SALPA round off a very busy year with their first headline show on the Main Stage at Esquires.\nThe band have clocked up over 50 shows this year with dates in Germany & France and a mass of UK festivals and club dates. The band released their single SMITH in September which saw them pick up radio plays on 6 Music with Steve Lamacq and Chris Hawkins both featuring the single on their shows. In November the band were invited to play the BBC Introducing Live event at Tobacco Dock. Last seen storming Esquires as support to Electric 6 in August the band are set to release a brand new single ‘Casanova’ at the end of January. \nHeading over from Northampton for the main support slot are THE KEEPERS.\nArmed with a love of 60s Psychedelia & Hofner Guitars the band capture the sounds of the 1960’s Fuzzy Guitar Psychedelic Pop and give it a gentle kiss with 90’s Alternative/indie music.\nNot afraid of hard work the band are relentlessly on the road week in week out which has seen them clock up some notable supports opening for the likes of The Beat\, Space\, The Spitfires\, The Moons\, The Franklys\, The Wholls\, VANT and in November saw the band secure a show at the legendary Shiine Weekender at Butlins. \nBASEMENT STRIPPERS are a 4-piece Alternative Rock band from the shire of Bedford. Forming in late 2016\, The band released their debut EP\, The Exotic Show in the summer of 2017. The EP’s main single We Are Not Afraid was featured in motion picture “Dead Squad”. \nThe first part of 2018 for Basement Strippers has been spent building up their reputation gigging around the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire area\, however things stepped up for them in June when the band signed to York-based independent label Lucky Boy Records. Following almost immediately from the signing\, they released their second EP\, Echo Chamber. Featuring the lead single and stomping political anthem Blindfold\, Echo Chamber is a collection of catchy\, powerful and enticing rock songs. Not afraid to put the effort in the band played their own headline set at Esquires earlier in the year packing out Holy Moly’s in their own right and make the leap up the stairs for their first slot on the Main Stage. \nGAYLIPS is a band with two people in it. One plays drums the other bass that is all. It does what it say’s on the tin. \nFollowing the show there will be a club night until late included in the ticket price \nDoors open at the slightly earlier time of 7.30pm with Gaylips opening things up from 8pm. \nTickets priced £6 are on sale now online from Seetickets or in person from the individual bands playing & can also be bought from the outlets of Esquires Bar\, Slide Record Store in Bedford & Mario’s Hair Design in Kempston.
