SUMMARY:The Wave Pictures + The Grubby Mitts
DESCRIPTION:After nearly 20 years and umpteen albums (is it 16? 17? 18?) we are excited to confirm someone is finally bringing The Wave Pictures to Bedford Esquires. \nFormed in 1998 in the tiny rural village of Wymeswold in northern Leicestershire\, lead singer and guitarist David Tattersall\, bassist Franic Rozycki\, and drummer Jonny “Huddersfield” Helm were heavily influenced by both the music played by John Peel and their parents classic rock collections. They soon relocated to London\, signed to Moshi Moshi records and have released a succession of highly acclaimed albums (as well as finding time to collaborate with acts such as Darren Hayman\, Herman Dune\, The Mountain Goats\, Jeffrey Lewis and Stanley Brinks) \nMuch loved by 6 Music\, The Wave Pictures are scarily prolific with a formidable discography. Frontman Tattersall is both a brilliant songwriter and guitarist\, often compared to Tom Verlaine (Television)\, Jonathan Richman and Johnny Marr. \n“David Tattersall is the greatest guitarist of his generation” – Marc Riley\, BBC Radio 6 \nWith a career that now spans two decades\, The Wave Pictures are much more than a cult concern. The regularly sell out venues like The Lexington (London) and The Portland Arms (Cambridge) and headline stages at Festivals like Indietracks\, End of the Road\, Green Man and Primavera Sound (Barcelona). Yet for some reason\, they have never played Bedford. Until now. \n“They’re possibly the best live band we’ve ever worked with” – Moshi Moshi Records \nTickets are £10 in advance\, available from all the usual places. \nSupport comes from Bedford’s own art house collective\, The Grubby Mitts with their found sounds and wonky electronica.

SUMMARY:Catholic Action + Victoria Rose & Guests
DESCRIPTION:Hot new band Catholic Action make a welcome return to Bedford Esquires after a brilliant performance in Holy Moly’s earlier this year. \nA product of Glasgow’s famously fertile music scene\, Catholic Action are proof that they do indeed write them like that anymore. Big tunes and massive melodies\, this is a band for fans of indie heavyweights like Arctic Monkeys\, Franz Ferdinand\, The Strokes and Belle and Sebastian. \nTheir ace album ‘In Memory Of’ is one of the most self assured debuts you’ll hear all year. Jam packed with glam guitar solos and huge choruses\, it’s 11 tracks so good that the band took the bold choice of omitting breakout single ‘Rita Ora’ from it. \nLead singer Chris McCrory said “In Memory Of has been a long time coming for us\, and it wouldn’t have happened were it not for you. It’s a record we’re incredibly proud of and we hope you are too. So\, we’re thrilled to be heading out on a headline tour of the UK to perform tracks from In Memory Of and more for the people that made it happen. Thank you! And see you in March”. \nTickets are £7 in advance\, available now from all the usual places.

SUMMARY:The John Otway Big Band / Liam Burke / Sat 24th Feb\, Esquires
DESCRIPTION:THE JOHN OTWAY BIG BAND\n8PM\, BEDFORD ESQUIRES\, SAT 24TH FEBRUARY \nA big welcome back to John Otway to Bedford Esquires following his sell out show at the venue earlier in 2017. This time John is upgraded to the main stage as he returns this time with His Big Band.\nJohn first achieved notoriety with his eye-watering performance on Old Grey Whistle Test and subsequent hit single ‘Really Free’ in 1977. A heady mix of blind ambition and rank incompetence was to keep this micro-star shining for almost two decades despite Otway’s ability to turn any situation to his own disadvantage.\nHis autobiography ‘Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure’ out sold\, by a factor of ten\, all the records he had released since his hit\, and now Otway is struggling to live up to this billing – selling out London Astoria for his 2000th gig in 1993\, filling the Royal Albert Hall in 1998\, and charting at number 9 with his 2002 single ‘Bunsen Burner’. \n2013 was another whirlwind year for Otway. His film ” Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure – Otway The Movie ” has been playing to packed houses across the country\, was shown at Glastonbury and selected for the prestigious Cambridge Film Festival. \nIn the midst of Britain’s 1970s punk revolution and after a momentous TV appearance where five and a half million viewers watched him land painfully on his testicles\, Otway was high in the charts\, his next HIT was 25 years later. \nExpect a great laugh plus all the rocking’ hits: Beware Of The Flowers\, Really Free\, Geneva\, Bunsen Burner\, Green Green Grass of Home\, and many more!\nFor John ‘Two Hits’ Otway\, ‘the future’s bright; the future’s Otway!\nTickets priced £12 advance are on sale now online from Seetickets and in person from Esquires Bar\, Slide Record Shop & Mario’s Hair Design in Kempston \n‘He’s a cabaret act masquerading as a rock act. He is gleeful\, anecdotal\, funny and life-enhancing.’’ Canterbury Fayre Review. \n“…makes it difficult to tell if he is barking mad or a musical genius….” Screenjabber Review

SUMMARY:The Total Stone Roses + King Purple / Esquires\, Fri 23rd Feb
DESCRIPTION:THE TOTAL STONE ROSES \n+ King Purple \n8pm\, Friday 23rd February\, Esquires\, Bedford \nThe Total Stone Roses play a 90min set of all of the best roses material including ‘She Bangs The Drums’\, ‘Fools Gold’\, ‘Waterfall\, ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ and ‘Love Spreads’ and come to Bedford Esquires on Friday 23rd February. \nThroughout the last year or so\, The Total Stone Roses have been playing gigs and stunning audiences throughout the country building up a solid fan base that makes them a force to be reckoned with in the tribute scene. The band are all in their early to mid twenties\, bringing the same passion\, vigour\, arrogance and charisma that only the young have\, the old want and that cannot be faked. This same drive is what gave The Stone Roses their ‘X Factor’ and took them to the heady heights of success and fame that they achieved in the late 1980′s and early 1990′s and beyond. \nThe Total Stone Roses are all pro musicians that do this for a living; all players involved are top draw Leeds College of Music graduates. They strive to re-create the roses sound live and are meticulous in the recreation of their material. You will not find a better sound a like band this side of 1989!\nWith the Roses on another hiatus and no gigs in their diary this is as close as you will get and probably closer to the front of the stage than their recent Wembley show.\nSelling out on their two previous visits an advance ticket purchase is essential. \nTickets available from Esquires Bar\, Mario’s Hair design Kempston \nAlso available from Esquires bar\, Planet Boutique in the Arcade & Marios Hair Kempston from 15th September. \nFREE AFTERSHOW PARTY WITH YOUR TICKET IN THE NIGHTCLUB.

SUMMARY:The Spitfires / The Keepers / Bedford Esquires - Sat 17th Feb
DESCRIPTION:The Spitfires return to Bedford Esquires on Saturday 17th February having absolutely torn the roof off the building a couple of years ago! \nThe band are led by lead vocalist\, guitarist and songwriter Billy Sullivan\, Sam Long on bass and vocals\, George Moorhouse on keyboards and vocals and Matt Johnson on drums. \nThe Spitfires might not see themselves as a political band\, but their kitchen-sink dramas of disillusionment with modern society speak for themselves\, and for the countless young people around the world who feel their voices and struggles are not being heard. \nTaking influences from the likes of The Clash\, Billy Bragg and The Jam through to Soul\, Reggae and Ska\, the band have released two albums to date. ‘A Thousand Times’ (2016) was the follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut ‘Response’ (2015) which saw the band enter high in the UK Album Charts and reach #6 in both the independent and vinyl charts\, with the single ‘So Long’ charting at #1 in UK Vinyl Singles Chart. \nTheir work ethic and powerful song-writing\, mixed with their acute social commentary and lack of mainstream industry support\, has made this fiercely independent band one of the most popular underground success stories in the UK today. This DIY attitude and \nindependent spirit has earned them a dedicated following and sold out shows across the whole of the UK and Europe. \nWith over 400 gigs under their belt\, the band have built up a passionate following that travel over land and sea and this enables gigs to be more an ‘event’. \nDJ’s Gary Crowley (BBC London)\, Steve Lamacq (BBC6Music) and Rodney Bingenheimer (KROQ) are fans and they’ve supported the likes of Paul Weller and The Specials. \nThe band recently signed to leading independent label\, Hatch Records\, who will release their third album in 2018. \nWhat the press said about The Spitfires: \n“Spiky\, rebellious rock ‘n’ roll delivered with no small degree of street smarts and style” – Clash Magazine \n“The fight-back from the beaten generation starts here” – Daily Mirror \n“Insurgent energy…demands and then holds your attention” – Shindig! Magazine [4/5] \n“A Thousand Times manages not only to capture the band’s momentum of the past year but expand their sound into new areas” – Vive Le Rock [8/10] \n“A masterpiece\, songwriting genius” – Original Rock [9/10] \nSupport comes from the excellent Northants lads The Keepers. \n————————– \nThis is a 14+ ages show – Tickets are available online now:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/the-spitfires/bedford-esquires-bedford/1172528

SUMMARY:Dreadzone + guests - Friday 16th February\, Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:DREADZONE + guests\n8pm Friday 16th February\, Bedford Esquires \nDREADZONE’s Dread Times tour arrives at Bedford Esquires on Friday 16th February with the band playing tracks from their top 40 Album “Dread Times” & other hits \nEntering an impressive 3rd decade\, Dreadzone\, one of the most energetic\, exciting and powerful live bands to emerge from the post-rave scene\, released a brand new album “Dread Times” in February which stormed into the Top 40 UK Official Album Charts on release – the first time the band have charted in over 20 years. The album also made the Top 10 in the Indie and Dance Charts. \nTheir old skool dread sound comes bubbling to the surface on this album and it digs deeper into their dub and reggae roots whilst still keeping the beats fresh and the textures electronic. Conscious lyrics\, social ills\, matters of the heart and mind merge with 21st century dubwise flavours. The album is an eclectic rolling journey that recalls elements from an illustrious 23 year history while always looking ahead to the next phase. ‘Dread Times’ is the band’s 8th studio album and the 3rd release on their own Dubwiser label. \nSince their inception in 1993 Dreadzone have steadily been releasing underground storms of albums\, progressively bettering\, refining and perfecting their own unique and inimitable take on dub – mixed as it is with aspects of dance\, sublime guitar riffs\, folk roots sentiments and breakbeat bass styles – whilst bringing the party to every club\, dancehall and field they’ve shown up at. Always blowing audiences away and steadily earning for themselves the best possible reputation as a live act in the process.\nNo strangers to Bedford we think this is the bands 4th visit to Bedford with 3 past sell out shows at Esquires. \nhttp://www.dreadzone.com\nhttp://www.facebook.com/dreadzone \nAd tickets £17:50 + fees on sale now from Seetickets / Esquires bar / Slide record shop / Mario’s Hair Design. \nUnder 16s must be accompanied by +18s
