SUMMARY:Covenant - Fieldworks UK Tour - Bedford 2021
DESCRIPTION:Due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic\, we have rescheduled this tour to September 2021. Original tickets will remain valid for the new dates\, refunds will be possible if you can not make the new date\, thanks for your support. Stay Safe and we’ll see you all on the other side!\n\nCOVENANT- FIELDWORKS:\nCovenant limited CD “Fieldworks: Exkursion EP” to be a tour exclusive. Before the new Fieldworks tour kicks off with 8 dates in the UK\, Covenant announce the release of a 5 track EP called “Fieldworks: Exkursion EP”. It’s the first release of an upcoming cycle of records attributed to the theme “Fieldworks”. Containing one song written by each member of the band it spans the tension\, dance and artistic leap of faith that Covenant has come to stand for. It also includes a strong collaboration with French electro-industrial newcomer Grabyourface.\nTracklist EP:\n1 Pantheon\n2 All That Is Solid Melts Into Air\n3 False Gods ft Grabyourface\n4 Popol Vuh\n5 Das Nibelungenlied (Erstes Abenteuer)\nThe songs are based on field recordings of great and small things from tours across six continents\, mixed with the everyday noise of living. It’s an angry reflection of the interesting times we live in and Covenant use field recordings as a medium and vessel to challenge our perception of media\, manipulation and agendas kept hidden from us. The “Fieldworks: Exkursion EP” also revolves around spirituality\, taking cues from old texts such as the Mayan creation myth Popol Vuh\, ancient temples like the Pantheon in Rome and lingers on the beauty that is life itself. What do we believe in? What is going on that we cannot hear but feel everyday? Rediscover the world through its sounds (and silence) and rise to the challenge of our times.\nwww.flagpromotions.co.uk/event/covenant-fieldworks-2021-uk-tour-bedford-new-date

SUMMARY:James Taylor Quartet / DJ Mark Russell - Sat 17.04.21
DESCRIPTION:James Taylor Quartet + DJ Mark Russell – Esquires\, Bedford\nNew date – Saturday 17th April 2021 – unable to attend? Please get a refund form the point of purchase.\nJames Taylor\, one of the great British instrumentalists of his generation has taken his trademark howling Hammond sound to the masses for over 25 years; still famed for its upbeat\, energetic live shows… with no sign of slowing down. The band’s relentlessly entertaining tunes take inspiration from the rare-groove style funk\, and boogaloo funk of the 60s and 70s and\, the band is\, without a doubt\, one of the most important jazz-pop crossover outfits in British live musical history today.\nAfter the collapse of mod legends The Prisoners in the 1980s\, and before moving to Sweden\, James recorded some demos with brother David on guitar\, the bass player from The Prisoners\, and a drummer from down the road… and thus The James Taylor Quartet was born. From tiny acorns mighty oaks do indeed grow\, and it wasn’t long before the first single\, Blow Up\, had been released\, the band were in the studio rehearsing for the Mission Impossible EP\, gigs were booked\, and the late great John Peel was offering a session.\nSkip forward 25 years and JTQ has evolved into one of the most exciting and well respected touring bands in the UK. With numerous albums to its name\, the band’s recorded output is not to be scoffed at. ‘Prolific’ is an understatement\, with albums touching genres as diverse as jazz\, funk\, soul\, rock\, and even rap\, not to mention a handful of library albums in between. Each album is an absolute must for any Hammond fan: James’ playing providing a solid and accomplished lead as always. Live\, the band is explosive\, with a breathtaking\, diverse unmatched back catalogue.\nJTQ’s fired-up signature tune\, The Theme from Starsky and Hutch\, cemented its reputation as master of the jazz-funk-r’n’b workout; 60s spy themes\, psychedelic and free-form jazz all added something to the band’s distinctive sound. Originally playing the Hammond B3 organ in the UK mod revival band The Prisoners\, James Taylor formed his own quartet\, and began playing music similar to the rare-groove jazz-funk then in vogue around London. By the early 90s\, that movement had spawned acid jazz\, and JTQ found itself at the forefront of a vibrant young club scene. The first single\, Blow-Up\, was released on the Re Elect The President label\, a precursor to Acid Jazz. The band’s debut album\, Mission Impossible\, was released the following year\, predominantly consisting of covers of 60s film themes such as Alfie\, Mrs Robinson and Goldfinger. In the early 1990s\, the single Love The Life reached the Top 40\, and the accompanying album\, Supernatural Feeling\, settled in the Top 30 UK charts. After releases on Polydor and Big Life Records\, JTQ returned to Acid Jazz\, and In The Hand of The Inevitable remains the label’s biggest selling album to date.\nIn 1997 James had the chance to fulfil a dream when he was asked to score the theme tune to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery\, the spy spoof starring Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley. JTQ’s Whole Lotta Live album was nominated for a MOBO award in 1998\, and the following year James featured on Tom Jones’ duets album\, Reload. James’ musical talent has been admired by numerous other acts: The Wonderstuff\, Manic Street Preachers\, The Pogues and U2 have all featured James and his distinctive Hammond sound on their albums.

SUMMARY:British Sea Power / Fri. 09/04/2021 / Bedford Esquires / SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:British Sea Power + Guests – Friday 9th April 2021 – Bedford Esquires \nA booking many years in the making\, and finally confirmed as part of our 30th anniversary celebrations\, we are very pleased to announce that British Sea Power will be gracing the Esquires stage on Friday 9th April 2021 \nA sextet from Natland\, Cumbria\, England\, British Sea Power are a rather conceptual indie band — compared more than once to Joy Division and the Cure — whose music incorporates elements of art rock and post-rock experimentalism. The group was formed in 2000 by brothers Yan Scott Wilkinson(vocals and guitar) and Neil Hamilton Wilkinson (vocals\, guitar\, and bass)\, who teamed up with a longtime friend\, drummer Matthew Wood. When Yan enrolled at the University of Reading\, he met like-minded musician Martin Noble\, who played guitar and keyboards\, and soon they began performing under the name British Air Powers\, changing the name to British Sea Power after a song from their early repertoire. \nTheir live shows received notice early on\, thanks in no small part to the group’s offbeat theatrics and visual flair (the band often wore military uniforms\, large stuffed birds\, and artificial plants were a big part of their stage set\, and a man in a bear costume sometimes joined them on-stage). Rough Trade’s Geoff Travis was impressed by one of British Sea Power’s (literally) wild performances and signed them\, the rest they say\, is history. \nFull support line up to be announced \n————————————- \nTickets are £16 adv\, on sale from Friday 7th February from:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/british-sea-power/bedford-esquires/1496627

SUMMARY:Skinnyman// TrueMendous// Zedo
DESCRIPTION:FDE EVENTS PRESENTS – UK HIP HOP\nLEGEND SKINNYMAN\nCelebrating 16 years since the release of Council Estate of Mind.\nhttps://youtu.be/gz49lnnzJak\nSKINNYMAN\nBorn Alex Holland in Leeds\, Skinnyman is one of the few British emcees that needs almost no introduction. Moving as a kid to Finsbury Park\, North London\, Skinny found a melting pot of cultures suddenly on his doorstep and immersed himself in the musical culture of reggae and dancehall. Highly influenced by Leroy\, Chas and fast tongue-talking Papa San\, he was introduced to rap at a very early age. While watching the first rappers such as Electro Ascension\, Wiggy Wiggy\, Grandmaster\, Melle Mel and Furious Five\, he immediately realized he had been built for that.\nWhen he was about 7\, he had to do a school play and decided to write his own script for his part. He built himself a Rubik”s cube\, put on a Rubik”s cube costume and did a rap about the Rubik”s cube and the mathematical structures of it. That was the first time he was onstage doing a rap.\nThank to his distinctive voice\, Skinny easily progressed through open mic battles and consistently won titles around London. After becoming a founding member of The Bury Crew\, in the early 90”s skinnyman moved on to establish by himself the seminal Mud Family alongside Mongo and Chester P with whom he released lots of EPs. These included the underground hits “Itchy Town” and “Lash Suttin”\, a reworking of Redman”s “Smash Something”. One of the best Hip Hop crews in England whether on vinyl\, on stage freestyling or battling other MCs\, the Mud Fam expanded with new members joining and Chester P splitting to form Task Force with his brother Farma G.\nShortly after\, Skinny signed a deal with Talkin” Loud and completed a handful of album tracks whilst at the label. However\, before the album was finished Skinny was sent to jail for 9 months for distribution of marijuana. Naturally talented for rapping and writing lyrics\, his reputation has grown even bigger for being in trouble with the police\, since Skinny believes in the good of marijuana and is an active promoter of its use.\nWhile he was inside\, Talkin Loud was shut down by its parent company\, freeing skinnyman from his contract. After the period of incarceration\, released his masterful solo debut album\, “Council Estate of Mind”\, with a deal via Low Life Records in 2004. Well received by fans and critics as the highest new entry in the UK”s charts on the week of its release\, heavily autobiographical and socially analytical\, the album makes much use of samples from “Made in Britain”\, a British film from the early 80s.\nSince the album”s release\, skinnyman received considerable attention from UK hip hop radio and press\, had the opportunity to work with grime artists such as Wiley and Shystie and supported The Streets at Brixton Academy. He even won in a rapping contest in London”s Subterranea against Eminem.\nIn 2004\, he was featured in “Tower Block Dreams”\, a BBC documentary. In 2005\, he played a small part in the interactive TV series “Dubplate Drama” and released two singles\, “Forever Rangers” and “Holla/None Of Them”.\nOn July 6\, 2006 skinnyman played live on the night of DMC DJ Championship 2006 UK Final and Battle for UK Supremacy at The Hammersmith Palais. Few days after\, he released the expected “DMC”s fifth Champion Sounds” album\, the series that in the past has featured Roc Raida\, the Mixologists\, DJ Skully and Plus One.\n\n\nPLUS SUPPORT FROM TRUEMENDOUS \nhttps://youtu.be/adPt_JfRRI4\nOne to watch out for” quotes Akil the MC from Hiphops Legendary crew\, Jurassic 5. One of the UK’s promising upcoming lyricists has finally arrived. The art of storytelling fused with: ear clenching wordplay\, bizarre punch lines and in detailed poetry (just to name a few) are elements that this Artist obtains exceptionally well…she really is TrueMendous.\nHer unique and creative way of thinking is complimented by her diverse portfolio of music already released with truckloads of more to come.\nhttp://www.truemendousmusic.com/\n\nSUPPORT FROM ZEDO\nAlso added to the line up is local Bedford based Rapper\, Producer and Musician Zedo. With a string of releases under his belt and a new EP dropping 20/03/20 it made sense to get him involved!\nHe will also be bringing his live band ‘ILL BEHAVIOUR’ along with him so expect vibes!\nhttps://linktr.ee/zedo_music\n\n\nTickets Skiddle > Slide Records > Esquires Bedford

SUMMARY:Melt Yourself Down / Thu 04.03.21
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents\nwww.thepadpresents.com\n\nMelt Yourself Down\n+ Guests – Thursday 4th March – Bedford Esquires \nWe are very pleased to announce that the amazing Melt Yourself Down will be gracing the Esquires main stage on Thursday 4th March! If you like bands like Sons Of Kemet\, !!! and Comet Is Coming\, this one is firmly for you.\nBoot and Spleen makes a statement\, both sonically and in its message. Inspired by the dark history of British colonialism in India\, it asks the question: “What is it to be British? What’s that identity now\, in 2019? What sort of behaviours are allowed towards minorities\, or from minorities towards the majority?”\nThere’s no simple answer to those questions but Melt Yourself Down are set to ignite debate by asking them. Founded by sax innovator Pete Wareham and fronted by lead vocalist Kush Gaya\, they play into a great tradition of British insurgents that spans decades and genres\, from the Sex Pistols to Radiohead\, and from Kate Tempest to Young Fathers. Yet the band’s lineage is also connected to jazz’s rich history of sticking a middle finger to The Man. “Jazz was the wild\, dirty music of the 20s\, 30s\,” says Kush. “It was not a sit down\, polite\, experience.” Pete adds: “I love jazz best when it feels dangerous.”\nThis new music is the band’s strongest statement yet\, representing both a peak of musical synthesis for the band as well as a personal triumph. Working with production legends Youth and Ben Hillier\, the band have reimagined themselves and created a bruising re-up of their signature sound with added synths\, anthems and epic joyrides.\n“So much has changed in the world since we started writing in 2016” says Pete. “We couldn’t ignore any of it and this new music is borne from our feelings of cultural restlessness in this constantly shifting global climate”.\nMelt Yourself Down have firmly cemented themselves at the forefront of today’s music innovators. The desire to create new sonic pathways is an integral philosophy to the band\, whose two critically-lauded albums to date have alchemised influences from Noisy No Wave to Nubian Rhythms to create an eclectic\, high energy and pan-global kind of punk rock.\nShowcasing the prolific talents of saxophonist Pete Wareham\, Melt Yourself Down rose from the ashes of his previous outfit Acoustic Ladyland and from everything he learned with Polar Bear. His work in reinventing and defying musical genres has paved the way for acts such as Comet is Coming\, Black Flower and mercury prize nominated Sons of Kemet\, to name a handful.\nWith their increasingly attuned sense to the world around them and each other\, more people than ever will undoubtedly be embracing the new sound of Melt Yourself Down.\n—————–\nTickets are £10 adv\, on sale right now from Seetickets.com:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/…/bedford-esquires/1480438

SUMMARY:The Meteors / The Tendons / Sat 06.02.21 / Bedford Esquires
DESCRIPTION:>We are pleased to announce the Meteors will be coming to Bedford Esquires in February for a night of psychobilly punk madness! Originally booked for November 2017\, the tour was cancelled when lead singer Paul Fenech fell ill\, so we’re very pleased to be able to have secured another date! \nTHE METEORS were formed in 1980 in a reaction to the bands that were singing about ‘Big Green Cars’\, ‘Rocking This Town’ and being ‘Rockabilly Rebels’. Preferring their songs to contain topics about vampires\, stomping in graveyards and radioactive kids P. Paul Fenech\, Mark Robertson and Nigel Lewis soon found themselves all over the media. A media who were eagerly lapping up their new sound christened (thought that is surely not the right word) – ‘Psychobilly’. THE METEORS were front page news in the weekly music press\, recording radio sessions and interviews for legends like John Peel\, and gracing the silver screen care of a movie short that did the rounds with the Two-Tone movie ‘Dance Craze’. Their film ‘Meteor Madness’\, apart from hosting some crazed performances with the unhinged trio\, also featured songstress Lilly Allen’s father starring as none other than the rather exasperated Devil\, strange but true. \nBy 1982 the original line-up had split with Lewis and Robertson going on to form their own bands while P. Paul forged ahead with a free hand with THE METEORS and his idea of how psychobilly should sound. That was a sound that had grown from one of a band’s own personal identity to a world-wide genre that is Psychobilly now over 30 years established and still growing and thriving around the globe. THE METEORS have continued to inspire and influence countless bands while continuing to lead the charge from the very vanguard. \n‘The Power Of 3’ is the latest studio album by the undisputed ‘Kings Of Psychobilly’. It is as uncompromising as ever and encompasses all the elements that have always made up THE METEORS brand of ‘Pure Psychobilly’\, mashing up rockabilly\, country\, surf and rock’n’roll. A sound woven by Paul Fenech’s rockin’ guitar and bile-spitting Beelzebub-rousing lyrics. ‘The Power Of 3′ proves once again that despite some aspiring would-be usurpers THE METEORS won’t be giving up that crown anytime soon. \nTickets are £15 advance\, on sale now here: \nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/the-meteors/bedford-esquires/1481109

SUMMARY:PVA + Lazarus Kane + Folly Group. Independent Venue Week
DESCRIPTION:PVA take cues from 808s and Heartbreak-era Kanye\, Kraftwerk\, and New York’s ‘No Wave’ scene of the late 1970s. The result is a live show that is unique\, energetic\, utterly captivating – and continually developing. \nThe culmination of these shows is is PVA’s debut single\, “Divine Intervention”. Recorded and released by South London’s Speedy Wunderground\, the label that helped shine a light on the scene surrounding bands like Warmduscher\, Black Midi\, and Black Country\, New Road\, “Divine Intervention” is a chthonic disco tune\, based around chugging synths\, anxiety-inducing guitar riffs\, and deadpan vocals. Speedy Wunderground’s Pierre Hall describes it as sounding like “Patti Smith fronting Factory Floor”. \nLazarus Kane + Folly Group make up this triple header
