SUMMARY:Lee Scratch Perry + Guests ***Event Postponed***
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents\nwww.thepadpresents.com \nLEE SCRATCH PERRY + Guests – 10th October – Bedford Esquires \nWe are super excited to be bringing a true icon and legend to Esquires on Saturday 4th April\, when the Godfather of Reggae\, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry comes to town! \nRegarded with awe throughout the music world\, Lee “Scratch” Perry holds status as one of the most enduring and original reggae producers and artists of all time. From his early days in the 1960’s as a singer and engineer for Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One in Kingston\, through his production of the seminal Wailers’ classics African Herbsman and Soul Revolution\, Perry’s innovative style marks him as one of reggae’s original treasures. His on the edge creative genius remains evident in his own solo albums of the 1970’s through his steady stream of mind-boggling releases of the 1980’s. \nOne of reggae’s undisputed pioneers\, Lee “the Upsetter” Perry has worked with almost everyone from the Heptones to the Skatalites to the Clash. Certainly one of his most notable contributions was the pairing of Bob Marley\, to Peter Tosh\, and Bunny Wailer with the Barnet Brothers (Carley and “Familyman” who had been the heart of the Perry’s group\, the Upsetters) and thus the forming of the Bob Marley and the Wailers. \nAfter his own studio\, “Black Ark\,” burned to the ground in the late 1970’s\, Perry laid low for a while\, only to resurface with a vengeance in England in the mid-1980’s. He went back into the studio with a variety of partners\, from Adrian Sherwood to Terence Trent D’Arby. During this time\, Perry took up residence in the Swiss Alps (“The mountains give me the fresh Swiss air to replenish my structure so I can soon join the immortal race”). Proof positive that talent on this scale will win out no matter what\, since the “madman” has come down from the mountain\, the World Music market has been gifted with more Lee Perry Product. \nPerry’s stream of consciousness rants have been called the babblings of the lunatic by some to the offerings of a prophet by others. Either way\, his unique dubbing style is infectious. Often\, the words are broken down into their purest elements\, sound and feeling. Perry’s groundbreaking use of sound effects\, echo reverb\, and rewind adds a new dimension to the folk tradition of Reggae and has influenced countless other artists. \nIn his plethora of newer material\, “Scratch” expounds on his favourite themes of extraterrestrials\, judgment\, justice\, corruption\, carnality\, and self proclamation\, all over some killer riddims. \nAlways one to follow the beat of his own drummers\, the eccentric genius Perry continues to break new ground with the hardest rebel Rasta tunes and the most unpredictable instrumental dubs. Lee Perry has most recently been touring Europe\, riveting both old and new fans with a full measure of his blessings. \nThe “Upsetter” charges forward making music that recalls African roots\, at the same time\, it reaches for the vastness of the outer space. \nLee is perhaps the only 80 + year old that can dance on one leg for 1 hour straight! \n————— \nTickets are £25 adv\, on sale right now from Seetickets here:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/lee-scratch-perry/bedford-esquires/1456006

SUMMARY:Melt Yourself Down + Guests
DESCRIPTION:We are very pleased to announce that the amazing Melt Yourself Down will be gracing the Esquires main stage on Wednesday 7th October! If you like bands like Sons Of Kemet\, !!! and Comet Is Coming\, this one is firmly for you. \nBoot and Spleen makes a statement\, both sonically and in its message. Inspired by the dark history of British colonialism in India\, it asks the question: “What is it to be British? What’s that identity now\, in 2019? What sort of behaviours are allowed towards minorities\, or from minorities towards the majority?” \nThere’s no simple answer to those questions but Melt Yourself Down are set to ignite debate by asking them. Founded by sax innovator Pete Wareham and fronted by lead vocalist Kush Gaya\, they play into a great tradition of British insurgents that spans decades and genres\, from the Sex Pistols to Radiohead\, and from Kate Tempest to Young Fathers. Yet the band’s lineage is also connected to jazz’s rich history of sticking a middle finger to The Man. “Jazz was the wild\, dirty music of the 20s\, 30s\,” says Kush. “It was not a sit down\, polite\, experience.” Pete adds: “I love jazz best when it feels dangerous.” \nThis new music is the band’s strongest statement yet\, representing both a peak of musical synthesis for the band as well as a personal triumph. Working with production legends Youth and Ben Hillier\, the band have reimagined themselves and created a bruising re-up of their signature sound with added synths\, anthems and epic joyrides. \n“So much has changed in the world since we started writing in 2016” says Pete. “We couldn’t ignore any of it and this new music is borne from our feelings of cultural restlessness in this constantly shifting global climate”. \nMelt Yourself Down have firmly cemented themselves at the forefront of today’s music innovators. The desire to create new sonic pathways is an integral philosophy to the band\, whose two critically-lauded albums to date have alchemised influences from Noisy No Wave to Nubian Rhythms to create an eclectic\, high energy and pan-global kind of punk rock. \nShowcasing the prolific talents of saxophonist Pete Wareham\, Melt Yourself Down rose from the ashes of his previous outfit Acoustic Ladyland and from everything he learned with Polar Bear. His work in reinventing and defying musical genres has paved the way for acts such as Comet is Coming\, Black Flower and mercury prize nominated Sons of Kemet\, to name a handful. \nWith their increasingly attuned sense to the world around them and each other\, more people than ever will undoubtedly be embracing the new sound of Melt Yourself Down. \n—————– \nTickets are £10 adv\, on sale right now from Seetickets.com:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/melt-yourself-down/bedford-esquires/1480438 \nAvailable from Tuesday 14th January from:\nSlide Record Shop – Esquires Bar – Marios Hair Design \nThis is a 14+ ages show\, under 16’s to be accompanied by an adult

SUMMARY:Squid + Guests (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:The Pad Presents\nwww.thepadpresents.com \nSquid + Guests – Tuesday 1st September – Bedford Esquires \n***Please note new date**** \nAfter chasing this band for well over a year\, we can finally announce that we’ve managed to secure a date with one of our faves\, Squid as part of their UK tour in March! \nThe hotly tipped post-punk\, disco-funk phenomenon Squid are back with new single ‘The Cleaner’ and the news of an EP called ‘Town Centre’ which is coming out on 6th September via Dan Carey’s Speedy Wunderground label – the first EP from the legendary producers singles label. Physical release of the EP will be 15th November. \nOn ‘The Cleaner\,’ Squid are at their dynamic best; making good on the angular funk of ‘The Dial’ and the disco-punk of ‘Houseplants’ that has seen them receive love from radio\, press and fans everywhere they’ve been. ‘The Cleaner’ is inspired by moving to London\, trying to adjust to the pace and lifestyle of the city and all the issues that throws up. As with any Squid track\, ‘The Cleaner’ is bursting with ideas and a clear energy and determination within the band to embrace different musical styles. \nDan Carey on Squid and The Cleaner: “I love Squid so much. To record with them is such a joy – the room is a sea of ideas and enthusiasm without any clashes of ego; every suggestion is given full attention. This \, combined with their musicianship results in beautifully inventive music\, underpinned by a hard steady groove and topped with lyrics that are important and surreal.\nWhen I first saw squid I was blown away. In the middle of being blown away \, they played The Cleaner. In the middle of The Cleaner I was blown away by the middle bit of The Cleaner. So I was 3 levels down \, and I thought ‘Yes…Squid” \nSquid have built their name on the back of a run of fine singles and their incendiary live shows – including three packed sets at this year’s Glastonbury Festival – which displays an energy and conviction that is positively transcendent in its chaos and fever. \nFormed in Brighton\, Squid is the brainchild of Ollie Judge (Drums & Lead Vocals)\, Louis Borlase (Guitars & Vocals)\, Arthur Leadbetter (Keyboards\, Strings)\, Laurie Nankivell (Bass & Brass) and Anton Pearson (Guitars & Vocals). \n—————- \nTickets are £8.50 Adv\, on sale right now:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/event/squid/bedford-esquires/1462318 \nTickets also on sale from Slide Record Shop\, Esquires bar and Mario’s Hair Design \nFull support line up TBC \nThis is a 14+ ages show\, under 16’s to be accompanied by an adult

SUMMARY:Lee Scratch Perry / Sat 20 March
DESCRIPTION:**THIS SHOW HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED\, TICKETS FOR PREVIOUS DATES IN APRIL AND OCTOBER 2020 REMAIN VALID**\nLEE SCRATCH PERRY + Guests – Saturday 20th March – Bedford Esquires\nWe are super excited to be bringing a true icon and legend to Esquires on Saturday 20th March when the Godfather of Reggae\, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry comes to town!\nRegarded with awe throughout the music world\, Lee “Scratch” Perry holds status as one of the most enduring and original reggae producers and artists of all time. His on the edge creative genius remains evident in his own solo albums of the 1970’s through his steady stream of mind-boggling releases of the 1980’s.\nOne of reggae’s undisputed pioneers\, Lee “the Upsetter” Perry has worked with almost everyone from the Heptones to the Skatalites to the Clash. Certainly one of his most notable contributions was the pairing of Bob Marley\, to Peter Tosh\, and Bunny Wailer with the Barnet Brothers (Carley and “Familyman” who had been the heart of the Perry’s group\, the Upsetters) and thus the forming of the Bob Marley and the Wailers.\nAfter his own studio\, “Black Ark\,” burned to the ground in the late 1970’s\, Perry laid low for a while\, only to resurface with a vengeance in England in the mid-1980’s. He went back into the studio with a variety of partners\, from Adrian Sherwood to Terence Trent D’Arby. During this time\, Perry took up residence in the Swiss Alps (“The mountains give me the fresh Swiss air to replenish my structure so I can soon join the immortal race”). Proof positive that talent on this scale will win out no matter what\, since the “madman” has come down from the mountain\, the World Music market has been gifted with more Lee Perry Product.\nPerry’s stream of consciousness rants have been called the babblings of the lunatic by some to the offerings of a prophet by others. Either way\, his unique dubbing style is infectious. Often\, the words are broken down into their purest elements\, sound and feeling. Perry’s groundbreaking use of sound effects\, echo reverb\, and rewind adds a new dimension to the folk tradition of Reggae and has influenced countless other artists.\nIn his plethora of newer material\, “Scratch” expounds on his favourite themes of extraterrestrials\, judgment\, justice\, corruption\, carnality\, and self proclamation\, all over some killer riddims.\nAlways one to follow the beat of his own drummers\, the eccentric genius Perry continues to break new ground with the hardest rebel Rasta tunes and the most unpredictable instrumental dubs. Lee Perry has most recently been touring Europe\, riveting both old and new fans with a full measure of his blessings.\nThe “Upsetter” charges forward making music that recalls African roots\, at the same time\, it reaches for the vastness of the outer space.\nLee is perhaps the only 80 + year old that can dance on one leg for 1 hour straight!\n—————\nTickets are £25 adv\, on sale right now from Seetickets here:\nhttps://www.seetickets.com/…/bedford-esquires/1456006

SUMMARY:SARPA SALPA + BASH & Guests
DESCRIPTION:SARPA SALPA \nFollowing a run of impressive singles in 2019 Sarpa Salpa released their debut EP “Say Something” on Friday 3rd January 2020.\nThe lead track of the same name; “Say Something” sees the band crank up the tempo and return to their indie dancefloor roots with a stomper of a synth powered banger which has had crowds at their live shows hooked from the opening bars. \nThe EP also features fan favourites “Lost Time” and “Paralyzed” as well as successful recent single “Before It Goes Dark” best described as “brilliant pop for the next generation” (Chris Hawkins\, BBC 6 Music). The 5 track closes with an acoustic rendition of their BBC Introducing Radio 1 Track of the Week “Casanova” from earlier in 2019. \nThe single has already again picked up massive support across BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music and the band have taken the EP out on the road with a string of dates around the UK. \n“Seeing them live reminded me of a young Catfish &The Bottlemen I saw at The 100 Club a few years ago – superb” –\nSteve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music) \n“Sounding great here on Radio 1\, one of my favourite tracks from the uploader recently”\nHuw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) \n“Great British pop for the next generation”\nChris Hawkins (BBC 6 Music) \n“Big hitting early Editors feel to this. Groove very much is at the heart and DNA of this band\, you will be moving non-stop throughout the whole EP’’ Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1) \nBASH \nWe are a five-piece pop band BASH! formed in Southampton in the year 2018\, when the reincarnated souls of fallen heroes were drawn together by the power of destiny\, music and University. Amongst the heroes is the lead singer Amanda Bashmakova who is tall as the Latvian pine with an abundance of energy in her vocals and on stage. Miles Hobbs\, the bass player in the band\, clashes with Amanda on stage with unwieldy bass swings. Joe Burgess\, the one and only guitar handler in the band has a pedal board that can produce sounds both possible and impossible in our current realm and can only be understood by NASA. Alongside him is percussion boy Angus McIntyre\, a chaotic neutral character who enjoys connecting wires to his kit whilst generously providing permanent hearing damage to the rest of the band. Last but by no means least is\, John Burdfield who owns the best hair in the band AND a Synth. \nTickets are on sale now from Seetickets priced £6.50 and can be bought in person from Esquires Bar // Slide Record Store // Mario’s Hair Design

SUMMARY:The James Taylor Quartet on the Main Stage
DESCRIPTION:James Taylor\, one of the great British instrumentalists of his generation has taken his trademark howling Hammond sound to the masses for over 25 years; still famed for its upbeat\, energetic live shows… with no sign of slowing down. The band’s relentlessly entertaining tunes take inspiration from the rare-groove style funk\, and boogaloo funk of the 60s and 70s and\, the band is\, without a doubt\, one of the most important jazz-pop crossover outfits in British live musical history today. \nAfter the collapse of mod legends The Prisoners in the 1980s\, and before moving to Sweden\, James recorded some demos with brother David on guitar\, the bass player from The Prisoners\, and a drummer from down the road… and thus The James Taylor Quartet was born. From tiny acorns mighty oaks do indeed grow\, and it wasn’t long before the first single\, Blow Up\, had been released\, the band were in the studio rehearsing for the Mission Impossible EP\, gigs were booked\, and the late great John Peel was offering a session. \nSkip forward 25 years and JTQ has evolved into one of the most exciting and well respected touring bands in the UK. With numerous albums to its name\, the band’s recorded output is not to be scoffed at. ‘Prolific’ is an understatement\, with albums touching genres as diverse as jazz\, funk\, soul\, rock\, and even rap\, not to mention a handful of library albums in between. Each album is an absolute must for any Hammond fan: James’ playing providing a solid and accomplished lead as always. Live\, the band is explosive\, with a breathtaking\, diverse unmatched back catalogue. \nJTQ’s fired-up signature tune\, The Theme from Starsky and Hutch\, cemented its reputation as master of the jazz-funk-r’n’b workout; 60s spy themes\, psychedelic and free-form jazz all added something to the band’s distinctive sound. Originally playing the Hammond B3 organ in the UK mod revival band The Prisoners\, James Taylor formed his own quartet\, and began playing music similar to the rare-groove jazz-funk then in vogue around London. By the early 90s\, that movement had spawned acid jazz\, and JTQ found itself at the forefront of a vibrant young club scene. The first single\, Blow-Up\, was released on the Re Elect The President label\, a precursor to Acid Jazz. The band’s debut album\, Mission Impossible\, was released the following year\, predominantly consisting of covers of 60s film themes such as Alfie\, Mrs Robinson and Goldfinger. In the early 1990s\, the single Love The Life reached the Top 40\, and the accompanying album\, Supernatural Feeling\, settled in the Top 30 UK charts. After releases on Polydor and Big Life Records\, JTQ returned to Acid Jazz\, and In The Hand of The Inevitable remains the label’s biggest selling album to date. \nIn 1997 James had the chance to fulfil a dream when he was asked to score the theme tune to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery\, the spy spoof starring Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley. JTQ’s Whole Lotta Live album was nominated for a MOBO award in 1998\, and the following year James featured on Tom Jones’ duets album\, Reload. James’ musical talent has been admired by numerous other acts: The Wonderstuff\, Manic Street Preachers\, The Pogues and U2 have all featured James and his distinctive Hammond sound on their albums. \n——————- \nTickets £20 adv + BF from:\nwww.thepadpresents.com
