SUMMARY:Smoove & Turrell ‘The Singles Tour’
DESCRIPTION:Smoove & Turrell ‘The Singles Tour’ \n7:30pm\, Friday 24th April\, Bedford Esquires \nThe story of Smoove & Turrell began in the post millennium North East of England with a group of working class lads and a shared passion for soul. Smoove had met keyboardist Mike Porter through the local music scene in Newcastle and recruited him for his ‘Smoove Live’ project for the label Acid Jazz. Around Mike’s house one day they overheard a neighbour singing sublime melodies in his garage with friends which turned out to be none other than a young John Turrell practicing in a band called ‘The Stevies’. After a couple of further sessions ‘scouting’ him they finally knocked on the door and had a chat and hit it off straight away. \nTheir first track was the now classic ‘I Can’t Give You Up’ recorded at Mike Porter’s house as his Hammond Organ was immovably wedged in his utility room. It was in fellow soul head Craig Charles that they found their first radio champion as he supported them heavily on ‘The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show’ which was a kick-starter for their assault on national radio eventually landing Radio 2 record of the week. \nThe band’s 6th studio album “Stratos Bleu” scored their first official UK charts Number 1 (Dance Album Chart) as well as making a healthy dent in the Overall album Top 40. Alongside this they were given an Album of the Day accolade at BBC 6 music\, cementing the fact that 6 albums in\, their brand of gritty realism doused in dancefloor euphoria is more relevant than ever. A delayed but relentless tour schedule for “Stratos Bleu” meant that it wasn’t until the middle of 2022 that they could get back to writing\, delivering their 7th album “Red Ellen” (named after a female labour politician who was instrumental in shaping post war attitudes to social justice) which was released in October 2023. Less electronic an odyssey than “Stratos Bleu”\, but still firmly centred on the dancefloor and with an overwhelmingly optimistic message of love and compassion\, “Red Ellen” is tempered as always with the reality of working class life in the North East of England. \nGuest support: The Miller Collective DJs \nTickets on sale now from Esquires Bar\, Slide Record Shop & Seetickets online

SUMMARY:Zed Bias | Matt Jam Lamont | Sean Harvey | Covie
DESCRIPTION:We’re very pleased to announce a midsummer celebration of bass is being held on Saturday 20th June with a stacked line up\, ft Zed Bias AKA Maddslinky\, Matt Jam Lamont (Tuff Jam)\, Sean Harvey and Covie! \n\nZED BIAS:Dave Jones\, AKA Zed Bias\, Maddslinky\, Phuturistix…. a producer and DJ from deep within the UK dance music scene. He scored his first top 30 track with ‘Neighbourhood’ before setting the blueprint for the darker UK Garage sound at the end of the 90s. He was asked to mix the definitive “Sound of the Pirates” compilation and at this time began to infuse a jazzier influence into his tracks.\n\nFrom the start of his career\, continuously until present day\, Zed Bias has been engaged in remixing duties for a huge number of well known artists\, from Missy Elliot and Mary J Blige to The Streets.\n\nMATT JAM LAMONT:As one of the stalwarts of UK Garage\, a champion of the genre in its infancy and now one of its most beloved forefathers\, Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont’s tireless involvement in the scene has been integral to the success of the movement as a whole.\n\nFollowing a residency at South London’s The Arches\, Lamont’s career really skyrocketed back in 1993 where a chance meeting between him and fellow DJ Karl ‘Tuff Enuff’ Brown gave birth to the now legendary production and remix team Tuff Jam. Leaving in their wake a massive back catalogue of defining records\, both Tuff Jam and Matt ‘Jam’ himself have appropriately attained the status of figureheads of the UK garage scene.\n\nSEAN HARVEY:Sean Harvey is a respected UK Garage DJ firmly established within the mainstream garage scene. Hailing from Bedford\, Sean’s journey began in 1999 on the legendary pirate radio station Risk FM. Over the past decade\, Sean has cemented his position as a standout name for garage lovers\, sharing stages with heavyweights including Artful Dodger\, DJ Luck & MC Neat\, MC Kie & Wideboys\, and many more.\n\nCOVIE:No stranger to Bedford Sam Covington (Covie) the home ground talent opens up the bill. Covie has worked with artists including Annie Mac\, Edris Elba and Pete Tong\, Mark Knight and Roger Sanchez performing in some of the world’s most famous clubs including Pacha\, Ministry Of Sound\, Ocean Beach\, Egg Club and the Ibiza Tour in the UK.\n\nSo let’s put on our classics and we’ll have a little dance\, shall we?\n\nTiered tickets are on sale now from Seetickets starting at £20 for early birds

SUMMARY:Courtney Barnett
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to be hosting the incredible Courtney Barnett at the venue\, as part of a very small run of intimate UK shows to celebrate the upcoming\, new album ‘Creature Of Habit’. Tickets are just £15 advance and going to go extremely quickly for this event – only be available by signing up to the CB mailing list. Tickets are limited to 4 per person\, or as album bundles. \nIn the hands of Courtney Barnett\, fragments of everyday life become rich and riveting. A deft lyricist and virtuosic guitarist\, she is an emblem of millennial wit and one of Australia’s most successful musical exports. \nBased for much of her adult life in Melbourne\, Barnett first found critical acclaim with 2013’s The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas and broke into the mainstream in 2015 with her debut album\, Sometimes I Sit and Think\, and Sometimes I Just Sit. Garnering a coveted Best New Artist Grammy nomination and numerous other accolades\, the album stands as a generational classic. \nBarnett followed her debut with 2017’s Lotta Sea Lice \, an acclaimed collaborative record with Kurt Vile\, and eschewed the vignettes of her early records on 2018’s Tell Me How You Really Feel\, her humid\, political sophomore record\, which featured the Margaret Atwood-invoking single “Nameless\, Faceless”. In 2021\, she released Things Take Time\, Take Time\, a remarkable artistic step forward. \nBarnett is also a powerhouse live act\, playing slots at festivals including Coachella\, Glastonbury\, Bonnaroo\, Governor’s Ball\, Primavera\, and Lollapalooza. \nJoin the mailing list >> https://www.courtneybarnett.com.au

SUMMARY:Peter Bruntwell + My Girl The River
DESCRIPTION:Peter Bruntwell (full band show) \n7:30pm Sat 21st March\, Bedford Esquires \nIn an uncertain number of years time\, it will be acceptably cool to say that you first got into non-Grammy-winning artist Peter Bruntnell through his classic 2024 album Houdini And The Sucker Punch\, before then going back and discovering his back catalogue of yet more “classics”. And you were there! You saw him live. You were one of those “10” people who saw him play in that modestly-sized room\, almost 30 years into his career. \nSo here we are again. Three years on\, another album into Peter’s 13 or 14 album catalogue and shouldering the burden of even more sublime reviews. Every possible positive adjective has been called into play\, although it must be noted that the word “sublime” can never be used enough. Not even 2021’s primarily solo\, slightly synthy lockdown album succeeded in putting an end to his non-success\, despite Mojo echoing the plea that\, “Somehow\, some way\, this cult and infinitely class songwriter must get his due wider recognition”. The Scottish Daily Express with its 5 star review\, slightly frustrated\, said\, or perhaps yelled\, “I’m getting tired of saying this: He’s brilliant”. The Irish Times thoughtfully combined two quotes into one\, saving us the trouble of going back and getting crushed under the sheer weight of Peter’s archive of press quotes: “With Journey To The Sun\, the man whose songs NME once noted should be placed on school curriculums has done it again.” And he continues to do so. But not without a brief foray into dance music\, in collaboration with mega pop-hit songwriter Rob Davies. A foray that succeeded in sneaking by\, almost completely unnoticed\, therefore providing us with no further fresh quotes. If veering off entirely into the dark world of autotune would have increased his chances of hitting the big time\, we shall never know. But fortunately Peter’s taking his chances. \nNew album Houdini And The Sucker Punch sees Peter re-employing his long-term band members Mick Clews (drums)\, Dave Little (electric guitar) and Peter Noone (bass)\, along with a number of his favourite musicians. Cameos include pedal steel virtuoso Eric Heywood adding magic to Houdini\, The Flying Monk and Stamps Of The World\, Son Volt / Uncle Tupelo’s Jay Farrar playing piano on Sharks\, Peter’s old partner in crime (we suspect quite literally)\, James Walbourne of The Pretenders tearing up Yellow Gold\, cellist Laura Anstee on Sharks and Jimmy Mac\, Son Volt’s Mark Spencer’s Hammond organ and piano on Let There Be A Scar and mastering man Peter Linnane touching up the album with some added Hammond organ and synth. \n
